Shizuo Akira ( Japanese 審 良 静 男 , Akira Shizuo ; born January 27, 1953 in Higashiōsaka , Osaka Prefecture ) is a Japanese immunologist. He is a professor at Osaka University who made groundbreaking discoveries in the field of immunology .

Akira is the recipient of several international awards including the Robert Koch Award , the Milstein Award , the William B. Coley Award , the Keio Medical Science Prize, and the Canada Gairdner International Award (2011). He has been a member of the United States' National Academy of Sciences since 2009 .

Life

Akira earned an MD from Osaka University in 1977 and a Ph.D. As a postdoctoral fellow , he worked in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of California, Berkeley with Hitoshi Sakano . From 1987 to 1995 he was a researcher in Tadamitsu Kishimoto's laboratory at Osaka University. In 1996 he received a professorship in the Department of Biochemistry at Hyogo College of Medicine . Since 2007 he has been director of the WPI Immunology Frontier Research Center at Osaka University.

Akira studied the mechanisms of innate immunity in particular. Upon examination of inflammatory reactions with knockout mice he could the role of Toll-like receptors ( Toll-like receptor TLR) discover the innate immune system. They react to certain constant antigens of microbes, belong to the Pattern Recognition Receptors (PRR) and activate cells of the immune system against the microbes immediately at the first barrier of the immune system in the skin and intestines. He also identified other molecules of the innate immune system, such as the RNA helicases RIG-I and MDA-5 , and researched the associated signaling system.
