Guido I. Embriaco

Guido I. Embriaco or Guido I. von Gibelet (* around 1180, † after September 1238) was lord of Gibelet in the county of Tripoli .

He was the son of Hugo III. von Gibelet († 1196) and Stephanie von Milly .

His father had to cede the rule of Gibelet to Sultan Saladin in 1187 after he was captured during the battle of Hattin . Thanks to the commitment of his mother Stephanie, Guido succeeded in the context of Henry VI's crusade. 1197 to regain the Gibelet reign.

In 1217 Guido took on the side of Duke Leopold VI. of Austria participated in his crusade in Palestine, in 1218/19 he provided provisions for the crusade army that was now in front of Damiette in Egypt.

He was in conflict with the Ibelin family . Therefore, he supported the emperor's side during the crusade of Frederick II , and took part in the conquest of Nicosia on Cyprus in August 1228 with Balian of Sidon in the emperor's army .

Guido is last documented in September 1238, after his death his eldest son Heinrich followed him.

He was married to Alix of Antioch (around 1185; † after 1204), a daughter of Prince Bohemond III , since 1204 . He had five children with her:

  • Maria (* before October 1214);
  • Heinrich I (* after 1214; † before 1271), Lord of Gibelet;
  • Raimund († after 1238), chamberlain of Antioch;
  • Bertrand († after 1271);
  • Agnes ∞ Bartholomew of St. Simeon, Lord of Soudin.
