from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heinrich I. Embriaco or Heinrich I. von Gibelet (* after October 1, 1214; † before June 2, 1271) was Lord of Gibelet in the county of Tripoli .

He was the son of Guido I of Gibelet († 1196) and Alix of Antioch. After the death of his father around 1238 he inherited his rule Gibelet.

Marriage and offspring

Heinrich was married to Isabella von Ibelin , daughter of Balian von Ibelin , lord of Beirut, and the Eschiva von Montbéliard since 1250 . He had five children with her:

  • Guido II († 1282), Lord of Gibelet ∞ Margarethe of Sidon, daughter of Julian Garnier , Lord of Sidon
  • Johann († 1282)
  • Baldwin († 1282)
  • Balian († 1313)
  • Maria († before 1290) ∞ Balian II. Garnier , Lord of Sidon

Conflict with the Count of Tripoli

During the war of Saint-Sabas in 1256, Heinrich remembered the Genoese origins of his family and sent the Genoese troops to Acre . With that he opposed the express prohibition of his liege lord Bohemund VI. from Antioch-Tripoli . Bohemond himself tried to remain neutral, but sympathized with the Venetians , and his quarrel with the Embriaco clan forced him into the argument. By 1261, Bohemond's aversion to open war against his liege, Heinrich, had flared up. Not only did Heinrich Bohemund reject the lordship and make himself completely independent with the help of the Genoese, but his cousin Bertrand, the head of the younger branch of the Embriaco family, even attacked Bohemond himself in Tripoli . The dispute dragged on until after the death of Guido's to 1271, and became only decided in 1282 as Bohemund's son and successor Bohemond VII. The Byblos Castle conquered, and Henry's sons Guido II., John and Baldwin were executed.
