Hugo III Embriaco
Hugo III Embriaco or Hugo III. von Gibelet , called the Limping One ("le Boiteux"; * before 1164; † around 1196) was lord of Gibelet in the county of Tripoli .
He was the son of Mr. Hugo II Embriaco of Gibelet. After his death around 1184 he followed him as Lord of Gibelet.
Like his father, he favored the trade of his compatriots, especially those of the vice-counts' Genoese families who controlled trade with Syria. As a result, the Embriaco family gradually gained a strong degree of independence from their mother city, Genoa . The Popes Alexander III. and Urban III. protested ineffectively against this development.
In 1187 he was captured by Sultan Saladin at the Battle of Hattin and was forced to cede Gibelet to him in exchange for his release. His son Guido I gained power as part of the Henry VI crusade. 1197 back.
In 1179 at the latest he had married Stephanie von Milly , the widow of Herr von Batrun , Wilhelm Dorel . With her he had two sons and two daughters:
- Guido I. Embriaco , lord of Gibelet ∞ Alix of Antioch;
- Hugo Embriaco;
- Plaisance († 1217) ∞ Prince Bohemond IV of Antioch ;
- Pavia ∞ Werner von Egisheim (called Garnier l'Aleman).
