Altenriet is a municipality in the Esslingen district in Baden-Württemberg . It belongs to the Stuttgart region (until 1992 the Middle Neckar region ) and the European metropolitan region of Stuttgart . The community belongs to the local government association Neckartenzlingen .

Geographical location
Altenriet is located in a scenic area. The place, naturally classified as Schönbuch , is pushed forward almost to the steep drop towards the Neckar Valley and offers a clear view of the Swabian Alb .
structure
Apart from the village of Altenriet, no other places belong to the community. A 31 hectare uninhabited exclave belongs to the municipality. This is four kilometers from the town center and is located in the Schaichtal on the Walddorfhäslach mark.

Neighboring communities are in the north Schlaitdorf , in the east and south Neckartenzlingen (both district Esslingen) and in the west Walddorfhäslach (district Reutlingen).

history
Early history
Altenriet was first mentioned as Riet around 1100 as the name of the local noble family, the name is derived from the word Ried for swamp. In the 13th century, the Lords of Riet built a castle in the area of today's Protestant churchyard. Later, the " Neuenriet Castle " was built outside the village , while the "Altenriet Castle" fell into disrepair in the 15th century. (Alten) Riet probably came to Württemberg between 1254 and 1265 . In 1446 Altenryet is mentioned in writing.
Administrative affiliation
When the upper offices were formed, the upper office in Tübingen was initially assigned , but was transferred to the upper office in Nürtingen as early as 1842 . Via the district of Nürtingen , the place came to the district of Esslingen in 1973.
Religions
Altenriet has been evangelical since the Reformation , even today there is only one evangelical community in the village. The parish, which has around 1,100 members (as of 2006), meets in St. Ulrich's Church for worship. Catholic Christians receive spiritual care from Neckartenzlingen.

The Heimatbuch des Kreises Nürtingen (1953) describes the coat of arms as follows: The local coat of arms, adopted in 1931, shows a jumping black male under a blue shield head with two golden pretzels in a golden field.
Culture and sights
music
The oldest club in Altenriet is the Liederkranz, founded in 1888. It is divided into a male choir and since 2011 in a choir project with the mixed choir ("auforcht").
Buildings
The church originally belonged to Neckartenzlingen. A branch church is mentioned for the first time in 1365. From 1468 it is attested to the St. Catherine and Ulrich. From 1648 Altenriet was supplied from Schlaitdorf. The current parish church was built in the 16th century, probably in 1538, after the Reformation with west and north gallery in the nave, organ gallery in the choir and pulpit south on the choir arch with a wooden sacristy in front and renewed in 1737. A total renovation with the removal of these fixtures and a complete roof renewal took place in 1957-1958, with a new west gallery, pulpit and altar also in three choir windows glass paintings based on a design by Rudolf Yelin the Elder. Natural monuments
To the south of the village are old sandstone quarries that have since been abandoned and overgrown. Today they are a natural monument.

In Altenriet there is the TSV Altenriet (gymnastics and sports club Altenriet). Some of his soccer teams in youth games form a sports community with the SpVgg due to a lack of players. Germania Schlaitdorf. The tennis club TV Altenriet, founded in 1976 and, since 2013, the riding club RV Altenriet.
Regular events
- One week before Easter, the traditional pretzel market , which has been known for over 340 years, takes place here. According to a legend about Neuenriet Castle , the pretzel is said to have been invented here. The highlight is a parade on Palm Sunday with traditional carriages depicting the legend of the invention of the pretzel at Neuenriet Castle.
- On the last weekend in September TSV Altenriet invites you to its slaughter festival.
- Every two years the local associations and the voluntary fire brigade organize the Gässlefest together with the community.
Economy and Infrastructure
Established businesses
In the 19th and 20th centuries, the sandstone quarry and a spinning mill were the most important economic factors. The sandstone mining was stopped in 1936. Today there are only smaller businesses and a furniture and equipment store in Altenriet.

Altenriet is served by the VVS with bus route 75 ( Degerloch -Bernhausen-Aich-Walddorf), bus route 188 (Nürtingen-Altdorf-Neckartenzlingen-Schlaitdorf) and bus route 189 (Neckartenzlingen-Neckartailfingen-Schlaitdorf). There are four stops in the local area. The B 27 from Tübingen to Stuttgart is about 4 km away at Walddorfhäslach. About this is Stuttgart Airport and the Federal Highway 8 in about 20 minutes to reach.
Altenriet does not have a train station, the nearest train stations are in Bempflingen and Dettenhausen . The train stations in Nürtingen and Filderstadt-Bernhausen can be reached by public transport.
Long-distance hiking trails
The famous Jakobspilgerweg leads on the Tauber-Neckar section through Altenriet. It comes from the direction of Schlaitdorf and leads along the Höllenbach over the Pfarrbrückle. From there it runs through the town center and leaves the demarcation on the Eiserner Steg over the Merzenbach. His further route leads over the Swabian Alb to Constance , from there through Switzerland, then through France and Spain to Santiago de Compostela . It is marked with the blue and yellow scallop shell , the bundling of the rays serves as a directional arrow.
Pump storage basin
In Altenriet, a pumped storage basin was built in 1914/1915 by the former cotton spinning mill Gminder in order to be able to pump up Neckar water from Neckartenzlingen and drive a turbine in the Neckartenzlingen hydropower plant . This high-pressure pump storage system was the first of its kind in Europe. After the pumped storage basin was demolished in 1998, a residential area was created on the former site.
education
Altenriet has two kindergartens and a primary school . After primary school, the students usually attend secondary schools in the Neckartenzlingen school center or in the Gustav Werner Community School in Walddorfhäslach. Since September 2003 there has also been a private primary school (Schulwerkstatt eV, Free School for Lively Learning). The school fulfills the education and training plan of the state of Baden-Württemberg and teaches according to Montessori pedagogy .

Public facilities
The Altenriet Voluntary Fire Brigade is responsible for fighting fires and providing help in the event of public emergencies in the local area. It consists of an active department, a youth fire brigade and a senior team.
Waste disposal
The waste management company of the Esslingen district is responsible for waste disposal. There are separate collections for organic waste , household waste and paper. As part of the Green Dot, packaging is collected in so-called yellow bags . Bulky waste can be picked up free of charge by handing in one of two vouchers a year, or it can be taken to a disposal station. Electrical and metal scrap and other recyclable materials can also be disposed of at the disposal stations. There are special collections of problematic substances for hazardous waste such as fluorescent lamps and paint.
Water supply
The Altenriet community is a member of the Ammertal-Schönbuch group water supply association. The association fully supplies the community with Lake Constance water.

Honorary citizen
The former mayor Herbert Jirosch was granted honorary citizenship on December 2nd, 2011 for his life's work, both on a local political as well as on a social, cultural and economic level.
