The Neckartenzlingen hydropower plant is located near Neckartenzlingen in the Esslingen district in Baden-Württemberg and is fed from the water of the Neckar . It combines a run-of-river power plant and a pumped storage power plant . The run-of-river power plant went into operation in 1885 and is now operated by Elektrizitätswerke WWS GmbH & Co. KG . The pumped storage power plant was in operation from 1914 to 1997. The upper water basin of the pumped storage power plant was located in the area of the municipality of Altenriet .

Run-of-river power plant

It is a run-of-river power plant of the diversion type power plant . The water required to operate the power plant is diverted from the Neckar with a weir and flows to the power plant in a one-kilometer canal . There the water reaches the three Francis turbines .

pumped storage power plant

Apart from a test facility from Voith in Heidenheim an der Brenz , the Neckartenzlingen pumped storage power plant was the first pumped storage power plant in Germany. The pumped storage power plant did not have an underwater basin. The water was drawn off directly from the inlet channel. The upper water basin, 125 meters higher, was one kilometer northwest of the power plant in the area of the municipality of Altenriet. The upper water basin had a capacity of 17,500 m 3 and the pumped storage plant had an output of 440 kW. In 1997 the headwater basin was dismantled and made room for a residential area.
