Bulky waste on a sidewalk

For bulky waste include bulky furnishings from households that do not fit because of their size or nature of the approved receptacle and therefore not with the trash in a trash can to be disposed of. Bulky waste is transported away separately.

The types of objects that belong to bulky waste are determined in each case: As a rule, this includes all movable furnishings, but not usually permanently connected to the apartment such as floor coverings, room doors, wall coverings or wallpaper; As a rule of thumb, some disposal companies state that anything that would be taken along when moving can also be considered bulky waste. Car and also excluding the most mature .

disposal

Three systems are common for the collection of bulky waste: In the first case, all pieces of waste are picked up at a predetermined date. With the second method, usually called “bulky waste on demand”, the producer has to call a certain point beforehand and order the collection service there. In most cases, it must be stated whether electrical devices and metal scrap are also included in the bulky waste, as these are often picked up separately. However, since most waste disposal companies try to bundle as many collections as possible, a specific date is allocated for the collection of bulky waste, especially in smaller cities, collection on a desired date specified by the customer is sometimes possible, but usually with a separate fee. In addition, in some municipalities bulky waste can be delivered to recycling centers without an appointment ; mostly it is not free of charge.

A special garbage truck is used to collect the bulky garbage , in which there is a garbage compactor, but no device for emptying garbage cans. When they are removed, the objects are loaded into the open rear of the collection vehicle. There, all of the bulky waste is shredded and compacted by the waste compactor. The garbage presses have a pressing force of approx. 400 kN at a hydraulic working pressure of approx. 110 bar. This means that the bulky waste has a weight of approx. 40 t. This means that a bulky garbage truck can transport around 10 t of compacted bulky waste.

Wood , paper , cardboard and metal are picked up in a separate vehicle or, after removal, they are sorted out from the bulky waste and recycled. The rest is incinerated in a waste incineration plant .

Disposal in a bulky waste container

While almost any type of household items can be handed in via the bulky waste collection, only certain types of waste can usually be disposed of in a waste container . Furnishings such as furniture, scrap such as B. bicycles, strollers etc. can be disposed of in the bulky waste containers, but upholstery, mattresses, cardboard boxes, carpets, plastics or even electronic scrap must be disposed of separately in this case.

Interventions by third parties and legal matters

In many municipalities, on the evening before the bulky rubbish is collected, people can be seen searching the bulky rubbish for useful items, as people often throw away things that are still in good condition and useful. Searching and distributing bulky waste is, however, in many cases an administrative offense . Scrap collectors also often make use of the bulky waste provided and remove metals and other recyclable materials. Many waste disposal companies do not agree with this practice, as they miss the income from the recycling of metals and only the worthless part of the waste remains. There is also the risk that scrap collectors will illegally dispose of uninteresting components (e.g. coolant and insulating material from old refrigerators).

Because of the pollution and partial destruction of the stored objects, which are caused by rummaging through the bulky waste or by children playing, and the associated dangers for people and the environment, fenced bulky waste collection points are set up in some communities, which only the residents of the surrounding houses can open with a key similar to locked rubbish bin systems.

From a legal point of view, there are different judgments on the question of ownership of bulky waste, the Ravensburg Regional Court ruled : “If an artist puts self-painted pictures with bulky waste, then because of the personal relationship to the objects there is no loss of ownership , only a transfer of ownership to the person responsible for the waste collection Declaration directed to the destruction of the pictures. ”In case of doubt, it can be assumed that the garbage disposal will become the owner and that the matter is not common property .

If bulky rubbish is not picked up promptly by the disposal company or if it is exposed long before the pick-up date, it can sometimes be left on the street for days. Then the bulky waste heap often grows very quickly. Citizens then often put their garbage in the bulky garbage, and the heap becomes a wild garbage dump . Illegal waste disposal of hazardous waste is also a criminal offense in which every polluter has to reckon with consequences ( Section 326 of the Criminal Code ).

In large cities in particular, it has become common practice for citizens to put surplus and no longer required everyday objects or furniture on the street with a note "To be given away" and thus offer them to passers-by for free. However, objects that have not been taken along or that are unusable from the start must then be removed by the owner and sent to the regular bulky waste disposal, otherwise a wild garbage dump can quickly arise.

amounts

If you look at the development over the past ten years, you can see that the volume of bulky waste in Germany is declining. While the total volume in 2001 was 2.67 million t, in 2011 it was 2.38 million t. This corresponds to approx. 6.4% of the total domestic waste generation.

Some waste disposal companies advise you to offer objects that are no longer needed but still usable free of charge via swap platforms or to give them away to interested parties in another way, as this can reduce the volume of bulky waste.
