Altenrieter pretzel market

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Old Rieter pretzel market held every year on Palm Sunday at the fairground "Krähschnabel" the community Altenriet in the district of Esslingen in Baden-Württemberg instead.

history

According to legend, the local baker tried to increase his profit by adding lime to the flour. However, he was discovered and he was imprisoned at Neuenrieth Castle. His wife and the Altenrieter, who missed their baker, asked the lord of the castle for mercy. And Herr von Neuenrieth was not an ungracious man. He promised the baker freedom if he could bake bread through which the sun could shine three times. In his dungeon the baker had the idea to bake the pretzel from milk, flour and lye. As soon as Herr von Neuenrieth tasted the pretzel, he pardoned the baker.

The festival was first mentioned in 1675 in a church convention protocol. In the description of the Oberamt Nürtingen, published in 1848, the following is stated: The pretzel market, which has existed since ancient times, is peculiar to our district, which is held on Palm Sunday at noon on the Krähschnabel near Altenrieth and at which the girls are delighted with their aprons full of pretzels by their lovers . In its current form with pageant, marquee and market, the pretzel market was first held in 1970.

In 2020 the market was canceled for the first time due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
