history
Finds from the Neolithic Age were made in the western part of the district, but it is not certain whether people settled there at that time. The Teckberg was used in the Bronze and Hallstatt Ages and in the early Middle Ages. In the second century AD there was a Roman manor in the Owener district. How old the settlement actually is cannot be determined with certainty.
Since many places in southern Germany had similar names, the first documentary mention of Owen was not possible until 1261. This mention is about a servant of the Lords of Teck named Evil Knight . Research assumes that the present city was founded in the middle of the 13th century at the latest above the old village above the Lauter , an approximately rectangular settlement with three larger gates and the Bernhard chapel on the market square. The road ran through the city. Remains of the moat and the city wall are still there. The church of the old village outside the city wall, the Marienkirche (documented in writing in 1267), was the burial place of the dukes of Teck. The city palace built by the dukes when the city was founded was probably destroyed in 1638/1639, and today's town hall was built in its place in 1837. In 1385 the city finally came to Württemberg and now belonged to the Vogtei Kirchheim. When the new administrative structure in the Kingdom of Württemberg was implemented , Owen remained assigned to the Oberamt Kirchheim . Owen was incorporated into the newly formed district of Nürtingen through the law on the division of the country .
Towards the end of the Second World War , 53 houses were destroyed in air raids in Owen on April 20 and 21, 1945. In 1945 Owen became part of the American zone of occupation and thus belonged to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Baden , which was incorporated into the current state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952. In 1973 the district reform took place in Baden-Württemberg , when Owen came to the Esslingen district.
Place name
The name Owen is pronounced Auen , which is also printed in brackets on some maps as a name affix. Auen means water-rich floodplain . Owen is the old German spelling for it and is retained in the place name to this day. Due to the unusual pronunciation, the place is also recorded in the spelling dictionary. Memorandum: "Auen say the cunning, Owen the stupid."
Religions
Owen has been evangelical since the Reformation . The Protestant parish of Owen has approx. 2100 members (as of 2005). The services take place in the over 600 year old Marienkirche .

coat of arms
Blazon : "In silver the black Latin capital letter O."
The capital letter, which probably comes from a spot mark and is significant for the initial of the place name, has appeared in seals since the 15th century. It can be identified as a coat of arms since 1535. From the late 17th to the 20th century, the Württemberger stag bar lay above him . In the 19th century, a quartered shield appeared temporarily: In fields 2 and 3 the diamonds of the Teck, in field 1 a spade, in field 4 an ear of wheat. In 1931, however, with official approval, they reverted to the 1535 template and omitted the stag rod.
