The Bernhardskapelle was a church of the dukes of Teck in Owen . The patron saint of the church was St. Bernard of Clairvaux .

history

A church in the upper town is mentioned for the first time in 1276. When measures were taken to secure the preserved building fabric, it was found that the beginnings of the building, or the outer walls, go back to the middle of the 12th century. The chapel served as a church for the Dukes of Teck, who lived in Owen and at Teck Castle. In 1332 the Romanesque building was fundamentally redesigned, it received Gothic tracery windows that are still preserved. In the 14th century the chapel was modernized and painted, these paintings are partially preserved to this day. Other paintings date from the 15th and 16th centuries.

After the Reformation the chapel was profaned and in 1560 it is mentioned as a tithe barn . During the conversion to a tithe barn, the top of the wall was probably cut and the medieval roof removed. The building served as a tithe barn until the 19th century. After the obligation to tithe was lifted, it was advertised for sale for a long time. In 1854 the dilapidated structure passed into private hands. In 1877 it was extensively converted into a farm house with a threshing floor , stables, hayloft and an apartment, and the condition that existed until 1999 was created. The gable roof was hipped, a barn door and a large number of windows were installed on the west side. The church and storage room were divided into smaller rooms by installing additional ceilings and walls. In addition, the ground level was lowered and a partial basement was made.

Todays use

The building was entered in the monument book as early as 1926. After lengthy negotiations, the town of Owen acquired and refurbished the house at Marktstrasse 12 in 1988. The paintings were also exposed, cleaned and secured in cooperation with the Baden-Württemberg State Monuments Office . Today the building is used as a cultural center and as a wedding room.
