Wilhelm Zimmermann 1869

Balthasar Friedrich Wilhelm Zimmermann (born January 2, 1807 in Stuttgart , † September 22, 1878 in Mergentheim ) was a German Protestant theologian , poet , historian , member of the Frankfurt National Assembly , the Württemberg state constitutional assembly and the Württemberg state parliament .

Life

Wilhelm Zimmermann was the son of a wine grower and later a kitchen servant at the Württemberg court in Stuttgart. Because of his talent, he could despite the poverty of his parents as his friend Eduard Mörike (today's high school Illustre Eberhard-Ludwigs-Gymnasium visit) in Stuttgart, came in 1821 in the Evangelical Seminar Blaubeuren and entered 1825 in the Evangelical pin Tübingen , where he became a pupil of Ferdinand Christian Baur . 1825/1828 he became a member of the Commentburschenschaft Tübingen. He graduated in 1829 and received his doctorate the following year. In 1832 he earned a doctorate in philosophy. He lived as a private scholar in Stuttgart until 1840 , then was accepted into the civil service as second pastor ("helper") in Dettingen an der Erms and pastor in Hülben . In 1847 he received the chair for German language and literature as well as history at the Polytechnic and Oberrealschule in Stuttgart and the title of professor. During the revolution of 1848/49 , the constituency Schwäbisch Hall / Gaildorf / Crailsheim elected him on April 28, 1848 as a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly (Paulskirchenparlament). Here Zimmermann joined the extreme left. In 1849 and 1850 he was elected three times by a large majority in the constituency of Hall as a member of the Württemberg state assembly. In 1851 he was dismissed from civil service because of his activities during the revolution, but then got a job as a pastor in Leonbronn and thus returned to civil service and church service. From 1851 he represented the constituency of Leutkirch in the second chamber of the Württemberg state parliament . In 1853 he resigned from this mandate. In 1864 he moved to Schnaitheim and in 1872 to Owen . He died while staying in Bad Mergentheim on September 22, 1878.

Works

Zimmermann published numerous, scientifically sound and at the same time vividly written historical books, of which his history of the great peasant war based on extensive source studies was particularly well received and is still published today. The events and political struggles of the 19th century are reflected in his evaluations and weightings - in particular his liberal view as a proponent of a "German Federal Republic" as early as 1848. In addition, he also dealt with theological, church history and literary topics, as Mörike said in 1836 Yearbook of Swabian poets and short stories and also wrote poems, plays and short stories.
