Friedrich Hottenroth

Friedrich Hottenroth (born February 6, 1840 in Johannisberg ; † May 26, 1917 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German researcher, lithographer , painter and author .

Life

After attending grammar school, made possible by a scholarship, Hottenroth began drawing on an autodidactic basis . Between 1873 and 1877 he worked as an illustrator for Wilhelm Zimmermann's illustrated history of the German people . In 1879 he began his work on German national costumes, the richly illustrated handbook of German national costumes was followed by the three volumes on German national costumes after its completion in 1892 and up to 1902 .

Hottenroth illustrated his descriptions of the costumes himself. To do this, he went on long hikes through the villages with his drawing utensils. His last work were the old Frankfurt costumes published in 1912 . He remained unmarried all his life and died impoverished in a home for poor artists.
