Reinhard Breymayer

Reinhard Breymayer (born January 4, 1944 in Urach ; † August 13, 2017 in Ofterdingen ) was a German philologist , pietism researcher and expert on the history of rhetoric .

origin

On his mother's side, Breymayer came from the old Pietist family of the Kullen in Hülben near Bad Urach .

Career

Breymayer grew up in Unterweissach and Hülben. He was a student at the Evangelical Theological Seminars in Maulbronn and Blaubeuren , state humanistic (ancient language) grammar schools with a regional church boarding school, and passed his Abitur there in 1963. He studied at the universities in Tübingen , Cologne , Bonn and Bochum . From 1964 to 1967 he was a scholarship holder of the Evangelical Monastery in Tübingen as the owner of a freelance position for philologists. In 1971 he obtained his Magister Artium degree in German , general linguistics and general rhetoric at the University of Bonn .

After completing his studies, he worked as a research assistant at the Universities of Bonn, Heidelberg and Stuttgart , the University of Education in Heidelberg and Schwäbisch Gmünd, and for the State Church Archives in Stuttgart and the Historical Commission for Research on Pietism in Berlin .

Since 1989 Breymayer lecturer for General Rhetoric at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen and since 1996 Germany correspondent for the Foundation ADAMAS - Foundation idol Hübner for Intercultural Studies at the Greek-German and Polish-German example in Schorndorf .

From 1971 to 1976 he worked on the publication of the journal Linguistica Biblica (Bonn), and in 1972 he was co-editor of volumes 1 and 3 of the Forum Theologiae Linguisticae series. Interdisciplinary series for theology and linguistics . From 1982 to 2000 he was a member of the editorial committee of the magazine ARIES (Paris / Sorbonne ). Since 1992 he has been the editor of Suevica . Contributions to Swabian literary and intellectual history (Stuttgart) in the series of Stuttgart papers on German studies . The Suevica mainly take into account the Swabian Romanticism .

Breymayer was the author of over 200 publications, mainly on pietism, rhetoric and German philology. Volumes 1 and 3 of the historical-critical edition of the works of the theosophist Friedrich Christoph Oetinger , which he co-edited, should be mentioned . Walter de Gruyter, Berlin / New York 1977 and 1999. He has published numerous articles in honor of renowned institutions and people, for example the Evangelical Monastery in Tübingen in 1986, the Sorbonne Professor Antoine Faivre in 2001 and Professor Hartmut Fröschle, who works in Toronto in 2005.

Breymayer asked for the first time the whereabouts of the private libraries of the pre-pietist Johannes Coccejus and leading pietists such as Philipp Jacob Spener , August Hermann Francke and Gottfried Arnold and was able to answer it in part on the basis of newly found auction catalogs for these private libraries.
