Velimir Petković (born July 5, 1956 in Tihaljina, Grude , Yugoslavia ) is a German handball trainer and former handball player .

Career

In his homeland, the 1.87 m tall Petković won a European Cup with RK Borac Banja Luka as a player and as a coach. He came to Germany in 1991 to take on the coaching position at SG Stuttgart-Scharnhausen , but was released after just a few weeks. After working for smaller clubs, he was able to establish HSG Wetzlar in the 1st Bundesliga from 1998.

Petković was employed at Frisch Auf Göppingen from 2004 until his leave of absence in December 2013 and was able to win the EHF Cup twice with the team. In October 2014 he became the successor of Aðalsteinn Eyjólfsson at the second division ThSV Eisenach . In March 2016 he was released as a trainer. In December 2016 he took over the coaching office of the Bundesliga club Füchse Berlin , with whom he signed a contract until June 2018. The contract was extended to 2020. He was on leave on February 28, 2020. A few days later, Petković took over as coach of the Russian national team .

Petković has had the Trainer A license from the German Handball Federation since 2000 . Before that he got his trainer B license in Stuttgart in 1996 .
