His father Irfan Gündoğan and his uncle Ilhan Gündoğan act as his advisors (as of 2015). Career

society

Gündoğan 2010 at 1. FC Nürnberg

Gündoğan started playing soccer at SV Gelsenkirchen-Hessler in 1993 and moved to the youth department of FC Schalke 04 in 1998 . After he was not used due to injury problems in the second half of the season, he left the club in the summer of 1999 and returned to SV Gelsenkirchen-Hessler. After five more years at SV Gelsenkirchen-Hessler and one season at SSV Buer, he moved to VfL Bochum in 2005 . For the second team he completed two games in the Regionalliga West in the first half of the 2008/09 season ; he scored a goal.

1. FC Nuremberg

During the winter break of the 2008/09 season he was signed by the then second division club 1. FC Nürnberg and signed a contract until 2011. Gündoğan came to Nürnberg for the second half of the season, although a transfer was initially planned for the new season. He was already on the bench in Aachen on the third matchday in the second half of the season, and his first appearance was on the last matchday against TSV 1860 Munich when he came on in the 62nd minute for Javier Pinola , who should be spared for the upcoming relegation games .

In the preparation for the 2009/10 season Gündoğan was particularly positive. Therefore, he made his debut in the starting line-up of 1. FC Nürnberg on August 1, 2009 in the DFB Cup game at Dynamo Dresden and scored the goal to make it 3-0. A week later, he was back in the starting line-up against FC Schalke 04 , making his Bundesliga debut. He made a total of seven appearances in the first half of the season, three of them over the full time. On the 6th matchday he succeeded in making an assist against FC Bayern Munich. On the 23rd matchday he equalized the 1-1 final score against FC Bayern Munich , and in the 2-1 win at Hertha BSC he provided the template for Angelos Charisteas ' winning goal .

Gündoğan also remained one of the most important players in the following relegation games against FC Augsburg . After the narrow 1-0 first leg win, he seemed to fail, which was perceived as a severe handicap . But he was able to play in the second leg and with the first goal of the game he played a key role in staying up.

In the 2010/11 season he developed into a central playing station in midfield. Together with Mehmet Ekici and Julian Schieber he formed a strong offensive trio. After the winter break, he was absent for a long time due to injuries and then, probably also through his high school exams, did not find his way back to his old form until the end of the season. Nevertheless, the interest of other clubs in Gündoğan was aroused, and the FCN could not hold him.

Borussia Dortmund

For the 2011/12 Bundesliga season , Gündoğan moved to Borussia Dortmund , where he signed a four-year contract. One million euros of the transfer fee was paid to VfL Bochum due to a transfer clause. In the first half of the season he played the first nine games for Borussia Dortmund from the start, but fell short of expectations. In the end, Gündoğan was removed from the starting line-up by trainer Jürgen Klopp and classified by experts as a bad purchase. In the second half of the season his performance improved steadily, and he scored, among other things, the winning goal in the semi-finals of the DFB Cup against SpVgg Greuther Fürth . His shot hit the post in the 120th minute, hit the back of substitute Fürth goalkeeper Jasmin Fejzić and rolled into the goal from there. At the end of the 2011/12 season , Gündoğan won the German championship with Borussia Dortmund for the first time in his career and also won the double with the DFB Cup against Bayern Munich .

In the 2012/13 season he was with BVB in the final of the Champions League, which they lost against Bayern Munich 2-1. In the summer of 2013 he was classified in the rarely awarded category "world class" in the table of football players .

In the 2013/14 season, Gündoğan only played one game in the Bundesliga and one game in the DFB Cup. He suffered from nerve root irritation syndrome , which did not allow any further use from August 10, 2013. After several months of conservative therapeutic treatment had failed to bring the hoped-for success and progress, he was operated on on his lumbar spine in Munich in mid-June 2014 and missed the start of the 2014/15 season . On October 10, 2014, Gündoğan played his first game after 422 days in a test match between BVB's second team against VfL Bochum II. On May 3, 2016, he suffered a patellar dislocation (dislocation of the kneecap) on his right leg during training. So he fell out for the cup final.

His contract ran until June 2016.

Manchester City

On July 1, 2016, Gündoğan moved to Manchester City for four years . He made his Premier League debut on September 17, 2016 at the home game against AFC Bournemouth and scored the goal to make it 4-0. Gündoğan scored twice in the 4-0 victory in the league game on October 29, 2016 at West Bromwich Albion and in the 3-1 victory in the Champions League game on November 1, 2016 against FC Barcelona . On December 14, 2016, Gündoğan tore a cruciate ligament on his right knee in the home game against Watford FC . On September 16, 2017, he made his comeback after a nine-month injury break in the game against Watford FC (6: 0).

His contract in Manchester runs until 2023.

National team

Gündoğan before the international match: Austria against Germany on September 11, 2012

Gündoğan is a multiple German youth national player. For the friendly game against Brazil on August 10, 2011 , he was appointed to the German senior national team for the first time . In the last European Championship qualifier for Germany against Belgium , he made his international debut for Germany on October 11, 2011.

Gündoğan took part in the European Championship in 2012 , but remained without use. He scored his first international goal on March 26, 2013 in Nuremberg in a 4-1 win in the World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan, with the goal to make it 3-0 in the 31st minute. On August 14, 2013 he was substituted in the game against Paraguay due to an injury and completed his next international match 586 days later on March 25, 2015 in a friendly against Australia . Because of his knee injury in May 2016, he was unable to take part in the 2016 European Championships .

At the 2018 World Cup , Gündoğan was on the pitch for 59 minutes. In the second group game against Sweden (2-1) he was substituted on in the 31st minute when the score was 0-0 for the injured Sebastian Rudy . Gündoğan was no longer used in the next game against South Korea , which Germany lost 2-0 and thus eliminated in the preliminary round as the bottom of Group F for the first time in World Cup history. After leaving the World Cup early, Gündoğan declared that he would continue to play for the German national soccer team in the future.

controversy

Meeting with Erdoğan in May 2018

On May 13, 2018 (a few weeks before the early Turkish presidential and parliamentary elections and in the run-up to the 2018 World Cup in Russia), İlkay Gündoğan met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in London . Even Mesut Ozil and Cenk Tosun who like Gündoğan also play at English clubs, attended the meeting and presented Erdoğan each one of their jerseys. Gündoğan's jersey was handwritten “SAYIN CUMHURBAŞKANIM'A [sic] SAYGILARIMLA” (“With respect for my president”).

The timing and symbolic power of the photo elicited political, social and on the part of the German Football Association (DFB) reactions and criticism, whereby the criticism, due to the approaching World Cup, focused primarily on Özil and Gündoğan. DFB President Reinhard Grindel described the meeting as Erdoğan's “campaign maneuver”, for which the national players allowed themselves to be abused. On May 18, 2018, Gündoğan and Özil met with the German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier . At the test match between Austria and Germany in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee , Gündoğan was whistled by spectators every time the ball touched the ball . The same thing happened in the friendly against Saudi Arabia on June 8th . While Özil did not comment on the criticism, Gündoğan tweeted the next day that he was "still grateful to play for this country".
