Maardu is a city in northern Estonia , around 15 km northeast of Tallinn .

location

The city stretches from Lake Maardu to the Pirita River and borders Viimsi , Jõelähtme and Tallinn .

City structure

The city is divided into four areas:

  • Industrial area in the area of ​​the former town of Kroodi, near the Tallinn - Narva motorway and the port of Muuga
  • Downtown Maardu (including Kallavere)
  • the area of ​​summer houses in Muuga
  • the park around Lake Maardu

history

Orthodox Church in Maardu

The first stage in the city's development began with the establishment of the chemical factory in 1949. The second stage was initiated with the construction of the power station in the late 1970s. From 1980 to 1991 Maardu was part of the Tallinn area. On November 7, 1991 Maardu was named an independent city by Estonia's President Arnold Rüütel . Today Maardu is the eighth largest city in Estonia with a good 15,000 inhabitants, most of whom are Russians.

Two kilometers south of Maardu, the highway 1 Tallinn - Narva (- Saint Petersburg ) ( European route 20 ) passes, which offers good connections to Narva, on the border with Russia. The port in Muuga, built in 1986, is one of the largest in the country, around 90% of goods are handled here.

A newspaper in Estonian and Russian has been published in Maardu since 1995. There is also a cable TV network.

education

Maardu has four schools, two for Russian-speaking children and one for Estonian-speaking children, as well as an art school. A total of around 3,000 students are taught by 200 teachers at all four schools.
