history

Manor house in Anija

Anija was first mentioned in 1241 as Hanaegus . The estate (German: Hannijöggi , later Annia ) was founded between 1355 and 1482. It belonged to the noble families Zoege , Staël von Holstein , von Ungern-Sternberg and von Wahl. The two-storey residential building (main building) was built in 1801. The large park was expanded at the beginning of the 20th century.

In Estonian literature , Anija gained importance through the social revolutionary novel Kui Anija mehed Tallinnas käisid ("When the men of Anija went to Tallinn") by Eduard Vilde , who refers to true events in 1858, as a resident of Anija against the high tax burden demonstrated.
