Loksa is a small town in northern Estonia .
location
Loksa is located in Harju County on the coast of the Baltic Sea between the Juminda and Pärispea peninsulas . The Valgejõgi River flows through the city and flows into the Bay of Hara.
history
The city emerged from the small village of Loksa (today's name: Kotka). It has been documented since the end of the 17th century on the right bank of the Valgejõgi. After the Northern War , the settlement comprised four courtyards.
Population growth did not begin until the 1870s, when the Baltic German landowner von Kolga , Count Stenbock, founded a brick kiln in Loksa in 1874 . Further steps of industrialization followed: in 1899 a workshop for the construction of sailing ships , in 1903 a slipway and in 1907 a sawmill . After the Soviet occupation of Estonia, the occupying power settled a large number of Russian-speaking workers in Loksa, who still make up a significant proportion of the population today.
In August 1993 Loksa received city rights.
economy
The city's largest employer is the Loksa shipyard ( Loksa laevatehas ). It belongs to the AP Møller-Mærsk group of companies .
