Map of Estonia, position of Lääne-Nigula highlighted

Lääne-Nigula ( Estonian : Lääne-Nigula vald ) is a rural municipality in the Estonian district of Lääne . The municipality was named after the place Nigula .

The main town of Taebla is 14 km from Haapsalu and 86 km from Tallinn .

In 2017, the previous rural community of Lääne-Nigula merged with the rural communities of Kullamaa , Martna , Noarootsi and Nõva as well as the village of Rehemäe of the also dissolved rural community of Nissi in Harju County . Since then, the municipality has consisted of three large villages ( Palivere , Risti and Taebla ) and 114 villages and is the third largest in Estonia in terms of area. The coat of arms and the flag of the previous municipality of Lääne-Nigula are still used.

The untouched landscapes with forests, moors and springs are interesting for nature tourists. The former house of the national romantic painter Ants Laikmaa (1866–1942), which today serves as a museum about his life and work, is particularly worth seeing in Kadarpiku .

The area of the former rural community of Noarootsi in the northwest of Lääne-Nigula was mostly inhabited by Estonian Swedes since the middle of the 13th century . Most of the Swedish-speaking residents were relocated to Sweden in 1943/44 shortly before the Soviet Union occupied Estonia . Since 1997 place names have been given bilingually in Estonian and Swedish.
