Piirsalu is six kilometers north of the village of Risti . From 1926 to 1950 Piirsalu was an independent rural community. The current village boundaries were created with the municipal reform in 1977. At that time, the small villages of Kabeli, Valkse, Vanamaa and Annamõisa were combined with Piirsalu.

Today the place has 172 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). The 21 km long Piirsalu jõgi river flows east of the village center .

history

The place was first mentioned in 1518 under the name Pirsell . In the 17th century the Piirsalu estate was separated from the Kuijõe estate under the name Piersal . It initially belonged to the Schreitenfeld family, then to the Blanckenhagen and Schulmann families . It was bought by Cornelius von zur Mühlen (1756–1815) at the end of the 18th century.

From 1794 until it was expropriated as part of the Estonian land reform in 1919, the estate was owned by the noble Baltic German family von zur Mühlen . In the interwar period , the property was used by the paramilitary organization Kaitseliit .

The manor house of Piirsalu with its numerous outbuildings was probably built before the middle of the 19th century. Today only the ruins remain.

Attractions

A wooden chapel has been documented since the 16th century when the Reformation took root in Estonia.

Today's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Piirsalu was inaugurated on the initiative of the landlord Arthur von zur Mühlen after four years of construction in September 1863. The stone building has 400 seats.

The house of worship in neo-Gothic style was built by the builder Jakob Olli, who took an example from the village churches in Germany. Copies of engravings by the artist Frédéric de Widt hang on the walls of the church . The works from the 17th century show the Way of the Cross . The originals are in the Läänemaa muuseum in Haapsalu . The altarpiece is a copy of a painting by the Renaissance painter Antonio Corregio (1494–1534). It represents the birth of Christ.

Also worth seeing is the historic jug on the country road that connects the cities of Keila and Haapsalu . The building with the post office and its two stables dates from the first half of the 19th century.

Missile base

During the Soviet occupation of Estonia, one of the largest rocket bases of the Estonian SSR was located near the place . R-12 missiles were stationed there.
