Attractions
The place Kullamaa (German Goldenbeck ) on the bank of the river Liivi ( Liivi jõgi ) was for several centuries the center of the parish of the same name . The place with its church and pastorate has played an important role in the Estonian cultural history. Local pastors were u. a. Heinrich Göseken (1612–1681), who published an Estonian grammar in 1660, and from 1710 to 1747 Heinrich Gutsleff (1680–1748), one of the authors of the Estonian translation of the New Testament (1715). The grave of the composer Rudolf Tobias (1873–1918), whose remains were transferred from Germany in 1992, is located in the Kullamaa cemetery .
The castle of Koluvere (German Lohde ) built in the 13th century is worth seeing . From 1439 it was one of the seats of the bishops of Ösel-Wiek . The castle was the last place of residence of the Württemberg princess Auguste Caroline (1764–1788). She was separated from her husband in the "care" of the Russian Tsarina Catherine II. On September 16, 1788, Auguste Caroline died in Koluvere under circumstances that have not yet been clarified at the age of 23.
