Pikaljowo ( Russian Пикалёво ) is a city in the northwestern Russian Leningrad Oblast . It has 21,562 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located on the flank of the Tikhvin ridge about 240 km east of the oblast capital Saint Petersburg on the upper reaches of the river Ryadan in the river system of the Neva .
Pikaljowo belongs to the Boksitogorsk Raion .
history
A village on the site of today's town was first mentioned in 1620.
In 1906 the Pikaljowo station, named after the founder of the neighboring farm Pikaljow, was opened here on the newly built railway line between Saint Petersburg and Vologda .
In 1932, in connection with the construction of a cement factory, a workers' settlement of the same name was built nearby, which was given the status of an urban-type settlement in 1947 and town charter in 1954.
From 1927 to 1932 Pikaljowo was the administrative center of an independent Rajons , from 1996 to 2006 a district-free city directly subordinate to the Oblast.

The city has a local museum.
Economy and Infrastructure
Individual works have been created on the basis of the earlier city-building company Glinosjom (Russian for clay ). In addition to ores from neighboring Boksitogorsk, RUSAL processes nepheline concentrates from the Kola Peninsula into clay and aluminum products. A cement plant owned by the Russian market leader EuroCement produced 2.7 million tonnes in 2005, while the Metachim plant produces soda and potash . There are also companies in the construction industry as well as the wood processing and food industries.
The city is located on the St. Petersburg – Vologda – Kirov railway line, which opened in 1906 (route km 237).
The highway A114 Saint Petersburg-Vologda bypasses Pikaljowo south.
