Pete Yellin
Peter Michael Yellin (born July 18, 1941 in New York City , † April 13, 2016 there ) was an American jazz saxophonist, flutist and clarinetist.
Live and act
Yellin, the son of an NBC studio pianist, first took private lessons with Augustine Duques and then studied saxophone with Joseph Allard and flute with Harold Bennett at the Juilliard School of Music .
He then worked with Lionel Hampton , Buddy Rich and Tito Puente and was a member of Joe Henderson's band from 1970 to 1973 , on whose album Pursuit of Blackness he was involved. He also worked with Mario Bauzá , Maynard Ferguson , Lionel Hampton and the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra and recorded with Sam Jones and Charles Earland during this time . In the following year he founded his own band with which he performed at the Newport Jazz Festival ; he also played with Tito Puente.
Yellin worked as a sideman with Bob Mintzer , Eddie Palmieri , George Benson , Machito and Chick Corea, among others . In 1984 he founded the jazz program at Long Island University , which he directed until the late 1990s as coordinator for jazz studies. He died in April 2016 of complications from a stroke .
