history

The Luga station building

The city was founded in 1777 on the decree of Catherine the Great on the banks of the Luga; a settlement at this point had been known since the 10th century. The name of the river comes from an Ischoric word (comparisons: Estonian laugas = German "swamp"). In 1781 the newly founded city was assigned to the Petersburg governorate . Luga received a railway connection in 1857. At the end of the 19th century there were two factories and only a few brick buildings. In 1908 the composer Nikolai Andrejewitsch Rimski-Korsakow died nearby on the Lyubensk estate . Until the 20th century it was a rather insignificant city.

In January 1921, a mixed train from Novgorod to Petrograd , which was also transporting gasoline , exploded near Luga while driving at full speed. 68 people died.

In 1927 Luga became the administrative center of a Rajon within Leningrad Oblast. During the Second World War , the city was occupied by the Wehrmacht from August 24, 1941 to February 12, 1944 . It served as a replenishment coordination center and was the scene of intense fighting.

Economy and Infrastructure

Today there are several smaller industrial companies in the city, while agriculture is predominant in the surrounding area. The M20 trunk road and the St. Petersburg – PskovWarsaw railway line run through the city .
