description

Ipomoea sagittata is a mostly small, herbaceous climber . Their stems are thin and completely or almost hairless. The leaves have thin petioles that are 4 to 7 cm long. The leaf blades are deeply divided like a spike at the base. The basal leaf sections are linear or lanceolate and often just as long as the almost linear terminal leaf section.

The flowers are in single-flowered partial inflorescences , the inflorescence stalks are shorter than the leaf stalks and strong, the flower stalks are elongated and thick and widened towards the top. The egg-shaped sepals are 8 to 9 cm long, they are hairless, almost leathery, blunt at the tip or rounded and spiky. The crown is purple, hairless, 6 to 7 cm long and 6 cm or more wide.

distribution

The species is widespread in the southeastern USA , British Honduras , Guatemala and Mexico , as well as on the West Indies . The ancient world occurrences in the Mediterranean area from Algeria and Spain to Turkey are mostly taken for natural despite the great geographical disjunction.
