The RoPax cargo ships of the Visentini class (also called Mersey Viking class ) were built in various designs for over a decade. In total, more than 20 units of different types based on a common basic design were built at the Cantieri Navali Visentini shipyard in Porto Viro on an arm of the Po Delta , the individual designs of which come from the NAOS marine engineering office. Characteristic of the ships, which only have a wide stern ramp, is a main truck deck that extends all the way to the deckhouse with large ventilation openings and a centrally arranged chimney in the form of an indicated sail.

Overview

NAOS P109

Stena Feronia (ex Mersey Viking ) 2007

The P109 type of ship is the starting point for the construction of faster and more economical RoPax ships at Visentini. For the two ships Mersey Viking and Lagan Viking , a new aerodynamic hull shape with twin skegs was developed by the engineering office NAOS and tested in a flow channel. During development, special attention was paid to the largest possible, unobstructed cargo hold, low operating costs and ease of use. The main engines (two Wärtsilä 8R46 marine diesel engines, each with 7800 kW output ) were placed relatively far back and up in the hull and drive the relatively short propeller shafts  via deflection gears. The aim was to make the design universally usable through minor modifications, which should enable substantial savings through series production. Due to the size of the hull, the ships could not be completely completed in the shipyard, but had to be towed in two parts over the Po to the coast in order to be completed there.

The ships have three vehicle decks:

  • the main deck, accessible via the 8.1 meter wide starboard ramp at the stern, 4.9 meters high and 806 loading meters (corresponds to around 62 semi-trailers)
  • the lower deck, also accessible via the starboard ramp and a lockable bottom flap, with a height of 4.5 meters, 247 loading meters and access to 100 parking spaces in a 1.80 meter high intermediate deck (not suitable for ferry operations, but only for the transport of new vehicles due to the height )
  • the open upper deck accessible via the 9.2 meter wide port ramp with a height of at least 4.8 meters (below the cabin area) and 1079 loading meters capacity as well as access to the parking spaces near the passenger cabins.

The ships have a relatively high freeboard , which is still over two meters in all hull damage scenarios taken into account in the planning. This made it possible to do without bulkheads on the main deck, which were complex in daily operation . However, when the ship is empty or partially loaded, the main deck is significantly higher than the harbor quay, so that the tailgate then clearly leads upwards. Simultaneous loading and unloading is possible thanks to the two relatively wide ramps. Side and front ramps were deliberately omitted in order to keep the construction simple and to enable universal use in all ports. The two ships are equipped with 86 two and four-bed cabins, 36 reclining chairs as well as a restaurant, a shop and a conference room are available. Four lifeboats for 62 people each and a number of life rafts are provided as life-saving appliances. A maximum speed of around 22  knots is achieved.

Both ships were handed over to the owner Levantina Trasporti Srl , a subsidiary of the Visentini Group, in the second half of 1997 , who chartered them to Norse Irish Ferries.

NAOS P129

Lisco Optima (ex Alyssa ) 2007

The Alyssa is an improved version of the two predecessor ships with the same hull shape. In particular, the management of the cars during loading and unloading has been optimized. Unlike the two predecessors, it has a covered upper deck with large ventilation openings. In addition, more powerful main engines of the type MAN B&W 9L48 / 60 with 9450 kW each were installed, which enable a speed of 23 knots. The loading capacity is 2262 loading meters plus 221 cars and 327 passengers (36 cabins and 74 seats). The ship was initially used by Tunisia Ferries on the Marseille - Tunis route, but has been in service for various companies in the Baltic Sea since 2001, currently as Optima Seaways for Lisco Baltic Service on the Karlshamn - Klaipėda route .

NAOS P172

Trinacria 2012

The next series, consisting of Stena Forwarder , Partenope , Trinacria and Cartour , was put into service in 2001 and 2002. The MAN machines of the Alyssa were retained; the lower car deck was brought to a height of 1.95 meters so that it can also be used for passengers, the upper car deck, however, was abandoned; the series can transport 2030 loading meters of trucks, but only 75 cars. The passenger capacity is 950 for short crossings; there are 72 cabins and 208 recliners for a total of 308 overnight passengers.

NAOS P205

This series, completed in 2003, consisting of the two ships Eurostar Valencia and Eurostar Salerno , is quite similar to its predecessors; there are 2,244 loading meters for trucks, but no special parking spaces. 93 four-bed cabins and 64 reclining chairs offer space for 432 passengers. Both ships were built for Grimaldi Lines . In 2006 and 2009, respectively, the ships were renamed Sorrento and Catania . On April 28, 2015, a fire broke out on the Sorrento , which was chartered to the Spanish shipping company Acciona-Trasmediterranea and operated on the Palma de Mallorca - Valencia route, about 60 km from Palma. Apparently all about 160 passengers could be brought to safety.

NAOS P241

Stena Lagan (ex Lagan Viking ) 2012

With the two units - Lagan Viking and Mersey Viking of the type NAOS P241 - each baptized with these names , the steeper "Flex Bow" was introduced, which is intended to improve the sea behavior of the ships. The shape of the deckhouse and the bridge were also changed. Otherwise they are quite similar to the P172 ships, the higher lower car deck has been retained, but space has been created for additional cars on the main deck and the number of cabins has increased. The ships have 2,257 loading meters for trucks (of which 249 on the lower deck, 1,021 on the main deck and the associated ramp, and 973 on the open upper deck) and 186 cars (95 of which are in the lower deck, which is only accessible through a hatch after the main deck has been cleared ). There are 484 cabin seats available for passengers.

Until 2020, Stena Line used both ships on the route between Belfast and Liverpool . In 2020 the Stena Lagan was first replaced by the Stena Edda and has since been extended by 36 meters at Sedef Shipbuilding Yard. Then the Stena Mersesy will follow.

NAOS P244

The two ships of this series with a capacity of 2244 loading meters, 186 cars and 622 passengers (484 in cabins and 138 loungers) were delivered in 2006 as Cartour Beta to Levantina Trasporti, a subsidiary of the shipyard group, and as Cartour Gamma to Caronte SrL. The Cartour Gamma has been in use on the Salerno - Messina route since then ; until 2010 the Cartour Beta also drove on this route. After a few short charters, it was then used under the name Celtic Horizon until 2014 on the Rosslare - Cherbourg route , where it replaced the newer Norman Atlantic of the P270 series. In 2014 the ship was sold to Stena and now sails as Stena Horizon again on the Rosslare - Cherbourg route.

NAOS P250

Borja 2009

The Borja , initially projected as Stena Ausonia , was completed in 2007. It is very similar to the P241 ships with 2275 loading meters, a passenger car capacity of 201 and space for 518 passengers in 121 cabins and 36 loungers. It was initially chartered to Balearia, which used it on the Barcelona - Palma line . In 2010 the name was changed to Baltic Amber and the ship was used on various routes in the Baltic Sea; it temporarily replaced the Lisco Gloria , which was destroyed in a fire . Since the end of 2010 she has operated for LD Lines on the St. Nazaire - Gijón route , and since mid-2011 as Norman Asturias . The ship was also used as an Asterion for ANEK Lines and as a Connemara for Brittany Ferries .

NAOS P256

The only ship of this design with 2256 loading meters, 201 cars and 517 passengers (481 in cabins and 36 recliners), which in turn is very similar to the P250 class except for the higher ice class 1A, was built on March 8, 2006 by Visemar Di Navigazione in Order was given and was initially intended for a charter to Stena Line during construction, but before completion a charter to Baleària Eurolíneas Marítimas was concluded in April 2007 . The finished ship was delivered as Borja Dos on October 19, 2007 and arrived in Valencia for the first time a week later, from where it began its liner service for Baleària to Palma on October 28. In April 2009 the ship started its next charter - the Italian T-Link Lines put the ship between Genoa and Termini and renamed it T Rex Uno on June 29, 2009 . Another charter for Baleària followed in February - initially on the line between Palma and Barcelona, and from June 12, 2011 between Palma, Ibiza and Valencia. In June 2011 Saremar chartered the ship from Italy and used it from June 22, 2011 to September 16, 2011 as Dimonios between Vado Ligure and Porto Torres. From September 17, 2011 to mid-January 2012, the ship was laid up in Livorno and then again in service from January 16, 2012 to September 16, 2012 on the Civitavecchia to Olbia route for Saremar. From September 25, 2012 the ship was laid up in Messina and then chartered between Naples and Catania for Caronte & Tourist from October 5 to 26, 2012, after which it was laid up in Castellamare di Stabia. From November 15, 2012, the ship operated the route between Genoa and Palermo for Grandi Navi Veloci. From December 28, 2012, a charter on the Livorno to Cagliari route for Tirrenia followed. In January 2013, Visemar finally sold the ship to the Italiana Di Navigazione shipping company from Naples, which operates it between Palermo, Cagliari and Naples.

NAOS P264

The only ship in the series is Watling Street , completed in 2008 , which was chartered out to the Spanish ISCOMAR shortly after delivery and was on routes to Mallorca as Pilar del Mar. Today she is on the road as Stena Flavia . Differences to the predecessor P256 include: a. 157 easy chairs. The ship has a capacity of 2290 loading meters and 205 cars; 587 passengers can be accommodated in four-bed cabins and 157 easy chairs.

NAOS P270

Three NAOS P270 ships , Norman Voyager , Scottish Viking and Akeman Street , were built between 2006 and 2009 for three different shipping companies. Like the P264 ship, they have a capacity of 2290 loading meters as well as 205 cars and 587 passengers, but unlike their predecessor, they only have ice class 1C.

The Norman Voyager was built for Epic Shipping in 2008. In 2008 she was chartered by LD Lines and used between Rossale and Le Havre. In 2009 the ship was chartered to Celtic Line Ferries , which operated the ship between Rosslare, Cherbourg and Portsmouth and from the end of 2009 between Rosslare and Cherbourg. In 2011 she was chartered out to LD Lines again. Le Havre became the new home port . The ship was used between Marseille and Tunis . At the end of 2011, the ship was sold to Stena RoRo and chartered out to DFDS Seaways , who operate it between Portsmouth and Le Havre.

The Scottish Viking Swedish Stena Line was delivered in April at Ermine Street Shipping (Epic Shipping) in London. In May the ship was chartered by Norfolkline and used between Zeebrugge and Rosyth . In September the ship was sold to Visemar Di Navigazione SPA . Home port became Bari . On July 12, 2010, Norfolk Line sold the ship to DFDS Seaways . The ship was used between Rosyth and Zeebrugge until December 14, 2010. From January 3, 2011, the ship was chartered by Scandlines and used between Ventspils and Nynäshamn . It replaced the Ask , which had operated there until then , which switched to the Travemünde - Liepāja route . Stena Line chartered the ship in mid-2012.

The Akeman Street was delivered on November 2 in 2009. In June 2011 it was renamed Scintu . It was launched on September 16, 2011 in Civitavecchia . In January 2014 the ship was renamed the Norman Atlantic . On December 28, 2014, a fire broke out on the ship, which was later extinguished. The ship was towed first to Brindisi, then to Bari and in July 2019 to Aliağa for demolition .
