The Grimaldi Lines is an Italian shipping company that the Grimaldi Group belongs. It operates in several countries, transporting both cargo and passengers. The main focus, however, is on freight traffic . Mainly different routes from Europe to Africa and South America are served . Grimaldi Lines has headquarters in Naples and London . The managing directors of Grimaldi Lines are President Gianluca Grimaldi as well as Emanuele Grimaldi and Diego Pacella.

history

The earliest connections of the Grimaldi family with the sea and shipping date back to the year 1348. According to the documents known up to now, the brothers Rajinerio, Richerio and Perino de Grimaldis were able to ship a ship through a gift from Queen Joan I rent. The actual establishment of the company, however, only dates back to the 19th century. Gioacchino Lauro founded a steam company in the second half of the 19th century. He had two children, Achilles and Amelia. The son Achilles rose to become the most important shipowner in Europe, while Amelia married Giovanni Grimaldi, a landowner and lawyer . Amelia sent her son Guido to his uncle Achilles for training.

After the Second World War , Guido founded a shipping company, the Sicula Oceanica SA, together with the brothers Luigi, Mario, Aldo and Ugo Grimaldi in 1947. Their first ship was a Liberty freighter that the Americans had used during the war.

The Grimaldi shipping company specialized in the Mediterranean - South America route . Due to the increasing demands of the passengers, the fleet had to be modernized by buying two new and modern liners. In the 1960s, the Grimaldi line pushed increasingly into the freight market, expanded and was able to develop its business relationships with numerous companies, mainly automobile manufacturers . The new Grimaldigroup , to which Grimaldi Lines belongs, expanded its routes across the Atlantic.

From 1983 to 1996 the Grimaldi Group was active in the cruise industry under the name Ausonia Cruise with the ship Ausonia , which had been bought from the Italia Crociere Internationale . Since 2000, under the name Grimaldi Lines and passenger shipping offered on the Mediterranean. To this end, new RoPax ships , including the Cruise Roma , have been ordered from Fincantieri .

The ferry fleet consists of twelve ships: Cruise Roma , Cruise Barcelona , Catania , Florencia , Zeus Palace , Ikarus Palace , Euroferry Olympia , Euroferry Egnazia , Europalink and Euroferry Brindisi as well as the ro-ro ferries Eurocargo Brindisi and Eurocargo Catania, which were taken over in 2012 .

There are also 19 ConRo freighters for regular freight traffic from Europe to Africa and South America.

Incidents

Collision of the Grande Nigeria on August 13, 2003

On August 3, 2003, the Grande Nigeria collided with the Nada V car transporter on the Scheldt . Both ships were damaged in the bow area.

Europalink accident on September 21, 2014

Early in the morning on September 21, 2014, the Europalink ferry struck a rock on the small island of Peristeres off the island of Corfu on its way from Patras to Ancona . The ferry leaked and was listed, but was able to call at the port of Corfu on its own . With the help of other ships, the ferry was prevented from capsizing.

There were 692 passengers on board who could leave the ship in Corfu. At the time of the accident, the ship was sailing for Minoan Lines, which is also part of the Grimaldi Group .

Fire on the Sorrento on April 28, 2015

On April 28, 2015, a fire broke out on deck four on board the Sorrento 17 miles from Palma . Since the fire could not be extinguished by the crew, it was decided to evacuate the ship. The Sorrento could later be unloaded and towed into the port of Sagunto , but was a total loss. In March 2016, the ship arrived in Aliağa, Turkey, to be scrapped .

Fire on the Grande America on March 10, 2019

On board the Grande America , a fire broke out in the area of ​​the containers stowed on deck on the evening of March 10, 2019 . The ConRo ship was located at that time in the northern Bay of Biscay on the way from Hamburg to Casablanca .

Since the fire could not be fought successfully with on-board resources, the crew and one passenger left the ship that night. They were from the British frigate HMS Argyll was added, which was located nearby and the disabled vessel had rushed to help.

The ship sank on March 12, 2019 at around 3:30 p.m. around 180  nautical miles off the French coast.

Fire on the Grande Europa on May 15, 2019

On May 15, 2019, two vehicles on board the Grande Europa caught fire. The fires could be extinguished with on-board resources. The ship was south of Mallorca on the voyage from Salerno to Valencia .
