From 1913 he was head of the building construction department and from 1925 to 1933 city curator in Cologne.

Life

"Siebengebirge" storage building in Cologne's Rheinauhafen, 1909/1910
"Jakob Pallenberg's Workers' Home", 1906

As the son of the teacher at the Apostle High School in Cologne (1864–1876) and later director of the teachers' college in Wittlich, Heinrich Hubert Verbeek and his wife Anna Maria, born. Wine rice grew up Hans Verbeek in Wittlich . In Trier he attended the humanistic grammar school . He studied architecture at the Technical University of Aachen (with Karl Henrici ) and at the Technical University of Karlsruhe (with Carl Schäfer ). In 1900 he was awarded the Schinkel Prize for his “design for a technical university in a provincial town” . After passing the state examination and being appointed government master builder for structural engineering (1901), he initially worked briefly in the Prussian civil service, but in 1902 switched to the building construction department of the city of Cologne. In the same year he became a member of the Cologne-based architects and engineers association for Lower Rhine and Westphalia .

In 1913 he took over the management of the Cologne Building Department from Friedrich Carl Heimann . In the period up to 1925, in addition to numerous urban buildings, he designed the large storage building in Cologne's Rheinauhafen , known as the “Siebengebirge” , the Deutz-Kalker-Bad and - together with Balduin Schilling - the ensemble of the Jakob-Pallenberg workers' home in what is now Cologne-Weidenpesch . The exhibition stand in Deutz is also an important work . Many of his buildings were destroyed in the Second World War; a compilation from 1985 shows a total of around 20 buildings.

In 1925 Verbeek asked for his replacement as head of the building construction department for health reasons. He was then transferred to the position of city curator, which had not been filled since the death of Friedrich Carl Heimann in 1921. In addition to his studies of medieval building forms, he mainly worked on Cologne's first directory of monuments, which, in addition to old churches and public buildings, also contained a number of residential buildings for the first time. Also worth mentioning is the concept for the redevelopment of the Martinsviertel in Cologne, developed with his later successor Hans Vogts , of the “preservation of an entire quarter”. Verbeek resigned from office as city curator in 1933 as building director.

Since 1906 Hans Verbeek was with Margareta Sibylla, geb. Carpenter married. The art historian Albert Verbeek (1909–1984) emerged from their marriage .
