Deutz-Kalker Bad, partial inventory

The Deutz-Kalker Bad was an indoor swimming pool in Cologne-Deutz that was built in 1913 and used as a public bathing establishment until 1996. Despite its closure in 1996, it gave its name to the “Deutz-Kalker Bad” underground station of the KVB until the end of 2012 .

Construction and operation

The Art Nouveau building was opened in 1914 as the "Kaiser-Wilhelm-Bad" and operated as a military bathing establishment for the Deutz cuirassiers until 1918 . After the First World War , the pool was open to the general public until it was partially destroyed in the Second World War . In 1947, the remaining rubble was removed from the basin and swimming was resumed. At that time, in addition to the Deutz-Kalker Bad, there was only the Neptunbad in Cologne . Although the pool only had a 20-meter pool with three lanes, the SV Rhenania Cologne swimming club held its practice here until 1961. Celebrities such as the boxers Peter Müller and Jupp Elze or the musician Hans Süper were regular bathers.

When the thermal bath in the Rheinpark burned down in 1986 , the thermal water was transported from there to the Deutz-Kalker Bad by tank truck. With the opening of the “Claudius-Therme” thermal baths in 1996, the Deutz-Kalker Bad was stopped and the pool was emptied.

Reuse

The former bathroom was converted into a hotel in 2008 for around eleven million euros. During the renovation, the stucco ceilings in the entrance area and the tiles in the reception room were retained under conditions of the monument protection authority. According to the architect, the design was "very much inspired by the historical silhouette, but it is not a reconstruction or historicizing architecture." It was possible to create a symbiosis of historical substance and modern ambience. The " Günnewig Hotel Stadtpalais " opened on May 1st, 2010 - since 2015 it has been operating independently as the Hotel Stadtpalais. A restaurant is scheduled to open in the swimming pool itself in autumn 2018.
