The SV Rhenania Köln (SVR) is a Cologne swimming club .

history

The association was founded in 1919 in Cologne-Deutz . The birthplace of the swimming and water polo department was the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Bad (later Deutz-Kalker Bad ).

Great sporting achievements were already achieved between 1920 and 1940. But the real sporting breakthrough came after the Second World War.

The SV Rhenania was initially the most successful Cologne and later also the strongest West German swimming club. For years the SVR swimmers were leading. Johannes “Jonny” Förster was the first from Cologne to scratch the 100 m under a minute and Rudi Becker was unbeatable in the then new dolphin style.

The ex-world record holder, Olympic runner-up and two-time athlete of the year, Gerhard Hetz , became head coach at SV Rhenania and made the SVR the most successful German swimming club in the 1970s and 1980s. Between 1977 and 1993 he and his young protégés achieved a remarkable number of titles and medals at the German , European and World Championships as well as the Olympic Games . The outstanding sporting achievement was achieved by Rainer Henkel , who was world champion in the 400 m and 1500 m freestyle at the 1986 World Swimming Championships in Madrid . The swimmers Ina Beyermann and Petra Zindler together won over fifty German championship titles in the 1980s and both won bronze medals at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles .

After a long break, Kerstin Vogel was able to win another German championship title in the open class in 2009. Coach Ralf Steffen thus crowned his many years of successful work. Sabrina Marzahn and Denise Gruhn also contributed German championship titles in their age groups.

But SV Rhenania Köln was also successful in art and high diving , especially thanks to Doris Pecher , a multiple German champion.

In water polo the SV Rhenania Cologne from the start has been activated. In the youth field, the German runner-up was won in 1986, even the German championship in 1987 and in 1993 the West German Cup was won. In 1995 he was promoted to the 2nd water polo Bundesliga. For the 2009/2010 season, a syndicate with SC Blau-Weiß Poseidon Cologne was founded. Under the name SGW Rhenania Cologne / BW Poseidon Cologne, the first promotion to the 1st water polo league was achieved in 2011 under coach Ilie Slavei.

The master’s department - i.e. senior citizens aged 20 and over - is also successful in the sporting sector. In this way, it was possible to achieve top positions at the European and World Championships.

Activities and events

In addition to daily training units and regular practice hours in the Cologne baths, the SVR organizes the International Rhenania Cup every year. Every year on Ascension Day, the traditional and popular Father's Day festival is held on the club's property on Poller Wiesen.
