The 214 meter long and 32.25 meter wide type of ship is designed as a multi-purpose ConRo cargo ship with a deckhouse in the rear half of the ship and a long, middle hold . The back is provided with a weather protection. The ships are measured with around 56,650 GT and have a deadweight of around 28,000 tons. They are designed for the transport of trucks, cars and other rolling loads as well as containers . Overall, the ships have roll decks with 2,500 lane meters . The ships are equipped with an electro-hydraulic stern ramp from McGregor, which can be loaded with 150 t. 800 TEU can be stowed in the weather deck area in front of the deckhouse. There are two cranes on the starboard side , each of which can lift 40 t.
In addition to the 26-person crew, there are accommodations for 12 truck drivers or passengers in six double cabins.
The ships are powered by a seven-cylinder, two - stroke diesel engine from Sulzer (type: 7RTA72U) with an output of 15,540 kW. The motor acts on a controllable pitch propeller and enables a speed of up to 19 knots . The on-board electrical system is supplied by four generators with a total of 4003 kW. The docking and casting off maneuvers are supported by transverse thruster control systems in the bow and stern.

Disaster on the Grande America in the Bay of Biscay
On the night of March 10-11, 2019 , a fire broke out on the Grande America , which was in the Bay of Biscay on the way from Hamburg to Casablanca . The captain initially tried to navigate towards La Coruna while the crew began firefighting. However, it turned out that the fire could not be extinguished with on-board resources. The 27 people on board (26 crew members and one passenger) then left the ship at around 2 a.m. and were picked up by the British frigate HMS Argyll at around 4 a.m. The emergency tug Abeille Bourbon had been dispatched to the scene of the accident by the French authorities and began fire-fighting operations on the evacuated ship on the morning of March 11, but stopped them on the night of March 12 because the ship was heavily listed. The Grande America sank on March 12 at 15:26 local time in position 46 ° 04 '8 "N 05 ° 47' 4" W. The shipping company had additionally equipped with fire extinguishing systems anchor handling tug Union Lynx from the Spanish Vigo and Terasea Hawk from Rotterdam was sent to the scene of the accident with a fire fighting team each, but both did not arrive in time. The shipping company announced that, in coordination with the French authorities, the wreck, which lies at a depth of about 4600 m , would be examined by an ROV from Ocean Infinity .
The ship was loaded with 2,210 cars, 1,298 of which were new, and 365 containers (34 of which were dangerous goods containers on deck and 11 in the hold), which contained construction machinery, around 100 tons of hydrochloric acid and around 70 tons of sulfuric acid . The French west coast is now threatened by an oil spill , as there were still around 2,200 tons of heavy fuel oil in the ship's bunker tanks . Several specialized units began collecting oil on March 15, despite adverse weather conditions, including several French deep-sea tugs that can be used to fight oil ( Argonaute , VN Partisan , VN Sapeur ), the naval multi-purpose ship A603 Rhone , the Spanish deep-sea tug Ria de Vigo and the Spanish emergency tug Alonso de Chaves , who also has oil fighting skills. On March 19, 2019, it was announced that due to better weather, the oil barriers could now be deployed. The Island Pride commissioned by the shipowner has also been on site since March 30, 2019 . The wreck will be examined with a remote-controlled mini-submarine (ROV).
