The Ulysses is a car ferry operated by Irish Ferries between Dublin ( Ireland ) and Holyhead ( Wales ) in the Irish Sea . Her maiden voyage took place on March 15, 2001 . With a capacity of up to 1,342 passenger cars, it is one of the largest ferries in the world in terms of vehicle capacity . It is named after the novel Ulysses by James Joyce .

history

The Ulysses was ordered from Aker Finnyards in July 1999 . On September 1, 2000, the ship was undocked at the shipyard in Rauma , Finland . She was delivered to Irish Ferries on February 28, 2001 and sailed under the Irish flag with her home port of Dublin. She was baptized on March 21, 2001. On March 25, 2001, the ship was put into service on the Dublin - Holyhead route.

Since January 2006 the ship has been sailing under the Cypriot flag with its home port of Limassol.

Data

With a length of 209 meters, a width of 31.84 meters and a draft of 6.4 meters, it is measured with 50,938  GT and has a displacement of 27,425 tons. The normal service speed is 22  knots .

capacity

The up to 1,900 passengers are spread over twelve decks, four of which with a total runway length of 4,076 m are used for vehicle transport. The car decks with either 240 trucks or 1,342 cars can be loaded and unloaded in 90 minutes. Because of the short crossing time of just 195 minutes, there are only 117 passenger cabins with 228 beds, but there are a number of bars, pubs, restaurants, including one of the fast food chain Burger King , shops and a casino.

drive

The Ulysses is powered by four MaK -M43 nine-cylinder diesel engines arranged in pairs, each with an output of 7800 kW, which transfer their output to two variable-pitch propellers , each 5.1 meters in diameter, rotating at 144.4 rpm. The four transverse thrusters (three at the bow, one at the stern) with a propeller diameter of 2.75 m are electrically powered. The two oars at the stern have an area of ​​16.4 m² each. There are three more diesel engines with 1520 kW each, four shaft generators with 3,100 kW each, and a Cummins diesel emergency generator available for the energy supply .
