Rosyth ( Gaelic : Ros Saoithe ) is a large town on the Firth of Forth on Scotland's east coast, 1.6 km south of Dunfermline , Fife , and about 19 km northwest of Edinburgh . It belongs to the Scottish administrative district Dunfermline and West Fife. Until the end of 2011, the port offered the only direct ferry connection from Scotland to mainland Europe; the port of arrival was Zeebrugge . The operating company Norfolkline / DFDS Seaways has discontinued the line.

The area is best known for its large shipyard , which was built in 1909. The village itself was laid out as a garden city and was initially intended to accommodate construction and shipyard workers. The shipyard is now about five square kilometers, a large part of this area was created by land reclamation during construction . The Rosyth naval base was closed in 1994, which is why there are no longer any ships of the Royal Navy stationed in Rosyth. The associated shipyard was the first ever Royal Navy shipyard to be privatized in 1997 and bought by the Babcock International Group . However, Rosyth continues to be the primary yard for maintenance, repair and modernization work on the UK fleet. It is also planned to finish the new Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers here .

In January 2007 the Department of Defense confirmed that consideration was being given to closing the Portsmouth Naval Base due to the downsizing of the fleet and instead reopening the Rosyth base as a cheaper alternative. In July 2007, however, the Ministry of Defense announced that these plans would not be pursued.

At the beginning of the First World War, the German spy Carl Hans Lody was active on the naval base in Rosyth .
