ANEK Lines ( Greek Ανώνυμη Ναυτιλιακή Εταιρεία Κρήτης ) is a Greek shipping company based in Chania on Crete , which is active in the ferry business. The shipping company operates connections between Piraeus and Crete as well as Italy and Greece and, alongside Minoan Lines and Superfast Ferries, is one of the three major providers on this route .

history

ANEK was founded in response to the sinking of the Iraklion ferry in December 1966, in which 241 people died on the crossing from Crete to Piraeus . A truck that was not properly moored in spite of the storm and disregarding safety regulations had broken through loading doors.

The Greek Orthodox Metropolitan of Kissamos and Selino, Irineos Galanakis , initiated the foundation of the people's stock corporation ANEK, based in Chania , whose shares could only be acquired by native Cretans. The aim was to use a cooperative model to displace the private-sector providers with their " soul sellers " from the market.

The first ferry was acquired in 1970. It was the Wirakel oil tanker , built in 1953 , which was converted into a ferry in accordance with the latest American safety regulations and was initially used on the Piraeus - Chania ( Souda ) route under the name Kydon . Two more ships, the ferry Candia and the ferry Rethymno , were added in 1973 and were put into service on the Piraeus - Heraklion route .

The Kriti ferry , acquired in 1978, was first used on the Piraeus - Chania route, like the Aptera ferry, which was acquired in 1987 .

The El. Venizelos was the largest ferry in the eastern Mediterranean when it was in service with ANEK. ANEK no longer uses the ship on its own routes and has chartered it out

ANEK Lines entered the international business in 1989 and offered trips between Ancona and Patras for the first time ; for this the ships Lato and Lissos were acquired. The ferry Kydon was extensively rebuilt and renamed Talos . The El. From 1992 Venizelos expanded the offer between Italy and Greece. In addition, a new connection between Trieste and Patras was established with the Talos ferry .

The sister ships Kriti I and Kriti II were integrated into the fleet in 1996 and, after a complete renovation, were used on the Ancona - Patras route from 1997. In the course of this renovation, the old ferry Kriti was sold.

In 1998, as part of a capital increase, the shares of ANEK Lines, which had previously only been available to citizens of the island of Crete, were freely offered on the Athens Stock Exchange . A year later, the offer on the Trieste - Patras route was expanded to include the newly acquired and completely renovated ship Sophocles V. ANEK Lines took over half of the shares in the shipping company LANE and handed over the Talos ferry to it . The Rethymniaki shipping company was also taken over. The ships Prevelis and Arkadi were integrated into the fleet. A further share of 16.5% was acquired in the shipping company NEL Lines .

In that year ANEK Lines also founded ANEK Lines Italia srl, in whose share capital it took a 51% stake. ANEK Lines took over a fifth of the shares in the newly founded shipping company ANEN.

In 2000 the ferry Lefka Ori was acquired, rebuilt and used between Trieste and Patras. ANEK has a 41.9% stake in the shipping company DANE, 50% in Etanap and 62% in Lefka Ori. The Fosen Yards shipyard's Olympic Champion high-speed ferry was put into service on the Ancona - Patras line. This reduced the travel time between Ancona and Igoumenitsa to 15 hours. The slower ships Candia and Rethymno were subsequently sold. In addition, the stake in NEL was increased to 19.05%.

The second new luxury ferry, the Hellenic Spirit , was delivered in 2001 and, like the sister ship, was used on the Ancona - Patras route.

Trieste has not been served by the shipping company since 2005. The ships of the former Trieste – Patras line have been calling at Venice since then .

In 2006 the ADAC recognized the Olympic Champion as the safest ferry. In 2008, ANEK LINES won the Greek Shipping Awards and was named Passenger Line of the Year .

The ferries Sophocles V. and Lefka Ori were sold on August 1, 2014, but the Sophocles V. was later chartered back and renamed Kydon .

Fire on the Norman Atlantic ferry

The Norman Atlantic in the port of Bari (May 2015)

The Norman Atlantic was chartered by ANEK for the winter schedule. The ship was not taken over until December 16 and was used on the Ancona - Patras route. On the night of Sunday, December 28, 2014, a fire broke out on the lower parking deck of the ship in the southern Adriatic, the heat of which quickly spread to the passenger deck. On board were at least 499 people (registered and stowaways and crew) and around 200 motor vehicles, including trucks with olive oil. In winds of 88 km / h and high waves, the ship was unable to maneuver around 44 nautical miles northwest of the island of Corfu in the direction of Albania.

In a dramatic rescue operation involving many ships, most of the passengers and crew were found alive; however, there are at least 13 fatalities. After most of the fire was extinguished, the ship was towed to Bari, where it was investigated by the public prosecutor.
