In logistics, a physical transport unit is usually referred to as a loading unit (LU) . A typical loading unit is usually composed of the loading aid (e.g. pallet , container , tray , lattice box pallet , unit load device ), loading unit securing devices and the package.

Loading units can be divided into three groups:

  • LE with a load-bearing function are mainly made of wood, plastic and metal. They can be stacked four times on top of one another. In addition to the Euro pallet, examples are the industrial pallet , the stake pallet, any roller pallets and one-way pallets. The correct delivery condition is important for all of these pallets.
  • LE with enclosing form ; lattice box pallets are to be mentioned here in particular. These consist of three fixed mesh walls and a removable front wall as well as a floor area. Solid wall box pallets are also representatives of this category. Special folding boxes and folding boxes offer a volume saving of 60% during return transport. For the sake of completeness, long goods cassettes and roll containers from the food retail trade should also be mentioned.
  • LE with the final form with the container as the best-known representative of this group. Swap bodies are also important. In contrast to the containers, these are characterized by good land utilization rates, but are usually not stackable. There are special air freight containers for air freight. These are manufactured in a lightweight construction and are moved horizontally over roller carpets in the aircraft.
