Xavier Tondo Volpini (born November 5, 1978 in Valls , † May 23, 2011 in Pradollano , Sierra Nevada ) was a Spanish cyclist .

Career

Xavier Tondo began his career in 2003 with the Spanish cycling team Paternina-Costa de Almería . In 2005 he won the overall ranking of the Volta ao Alentejo stage race , in 2007 the Grande Prémio Internacional de Torres Vedras and the Tour of Portugal and in 2011 the overall ranking of the Vuelta a Castilla y León . He also won several daily sections of international tours, including 2010 the ProTour competitions Paris – Nice and Tour of Catalonia . He has competed since 2009 - initially as a member of the Professional Continental Team Andalucía-Cajasur Grand Tours . His best result was fifth at the Vuelta a España 2010 .

On May 23, 2011, Tondo died in Pradollano in the Sierra Nevada , where he was preparing for the Tour de France , as a result of an accident in which he was crushed by his car while closing a garage door.
