The Seatruck R-Class is a class of four ro-pax ships owned by the Clipper Group shipping company Seatruck Ferries in Heysham .

history

The ships were built from 1996 to 1999 at the Astilleros de Huelva shipyard in Huelva for the Estonian Shipping Company and put into service as Lehola , Lembitu , Varbola and Leili under the flag of Estonia with home port Tallinn . The Estonian Shipping Company used the ships primarily in the Baltic Sea and North Sea . At times, the ships were also chartered out to other shipping companies and were partly renamed for this.

In April 2005 all four ships were sold by the Estonian Shipping Company to the Greek shipping company Elmira Shipping & Trading in Piraeus for a total of around USD 55 million . The Estonian Shipping Company gave up its ro-ro business with the sale of the ships. Elmira Shipping & Trading brought the ships under the flag of Malta with home port Valletta . The new names of the ships were RR Triumph , RR Challenge , RR Arrow and RR Shield .

In 2007 the ships were resold and given new names again. Two of the ships, the RR Challenge and the RR Shield , went to Attica Enterprise in Piraeus for a total of 30 million euros in September of that year (the Attica Group also includes Superfast Ferries ), the other two ships, the RR Triumph and the RR Arrow went to Seatruck Ferries in October for a total of 30 million euros. The new names of the ships were Challenge , Shield , Triumph and Arrow . In early 2008, Seatruck Ferries also took over the two ships from Attica Enterprise.

Three of the ships were initially chartered to other shipping companies, the fourth ship, the Challenge , had already been chartered by Attika Enterprises before being sold to Seatruck Ferries and was in use on the route between Liverpool and Dublin . After the expiry of the charter contracts, Seatruck Ferries' ships were used in the Irish Sea between Great Britain and Ireland , but were also chartered out to other shipping companies at times.

Two of the ships have been chartered to NorthLink Ferries since 2010. NorthLink Ferries, part of the Serco Group since 2012 , operates the ships as Helliar and Hildasay between mainland Scotland and Orkney and the Shetlands . The UK transport workers' union, the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers, protested repeatedly that some of the crew on the two ships were paid below the UK minimum wage . Since Seatruck Ferries did not want to adjust the wages to the minimum wage, the charter contract for the two ships was changed so that Seatruck Ferries chartered the ships on a bareboat basis instead of on a time charter and thus without a crew. Seatruck Ferries' contract partner was Caledonian Maritime Assets, which in turn provides the ships to Northlink Ferries.

description

The drive takes place by two Wärtsilä - diesel engines (type: 9R32), each with 3,700  kW power . The motors act on two variable pitch propellers via reduction gears . The ships can reach speeds of up to 16  knots . They are equipped with a bow thruster with an output of 600 kW.

For electricity generation are two Leroy-Somer - wave generators , each with 600 kW power (750  kVA apparent power ), which via a respective output shaft are driven by the main engines, are available. Furthermore, two diesel generator sets are available, in which two Leroy-Somer generators with 612 kW output (765 kVA apparent output) are driven by two Wärtsilä diesel engines with 600 kW output each. A diesel generator set from Wärtsilä was installed as a port and emergency generator.

The ships have three ro-ro decks , a deck on the tank ceiling , deck 2 above and the upper, open deck  1. The side height up to deck 2 is 7.20 meters, the side height up to deck 1 is 12.90 meters . The ships are loaded and unloaded via a stern ramp , via which deck 2 can be reached. The ramp is 10 meters long. The part of the ramp to be placed on the pier is around 6.60 meters wide in the area of the finger plates. At the transition to the ship deck, the ramp is 13.0 meters wide. The ramp can be loaded with 60 t. Deck 2 and Deck 1 are connected by a 37.0 meter long, 3.3 meter wide ramp that can be loaded with 60 t / m². The ro-ro deck below deck 2 can be reached via a freight elevator 18.8 meters long and 3.5 meters wide. The freight elevator can move 60 t. Under load it moves about 9 meters per minute, empty about 18 meters per minute.

A total of 1,057  meters of gauge are available, of which 205 meters are on the tank ceiling, 455 meters on deck 2 and 397 meters on the open deck 1. 628 m² are available on the tank ceiling, 1,366 m² on deck 2 and 1,260 m² on deck 1. The tank top can be loaded with 5. t / m², deck 2 and deck 1 with 2 t / m² each. The usable height is 5.0 meters. The vehicle capacity is 65 trucks or trailers .

There is space on board the ships for 266 20-foot containers (or 126 40-foot containers). The weight of a 20-foot container stack is limited to 50 t and that of a 40-foot container stack to 75 t. The total weight of the containers to be loaded can be a maximum of 2,716 t. There are 50 connections for refrigerated containers or vehicles with temperature-controlled cargo.

The deckhouse is in the rear of the ships. It can accommodate up to 18 crew members and 12 truck drivers.
