The Duchess M was a ferry of the Cypriot shipping company Marlines , which was put into service in 1970 as a RoRo freighter under the name Wanaka . The ship stayed in service until 2011 and was scrapped in Turkey in 2014 .
history
The Wanaka was built under hull number 598 at Taikoo Dockyard & Engineering Company in Hong Kong and was launched on December 19, 1969. After the takeover by the New Zealand Union Steam Ship Company in April 1970, the ship began service on the route from Christchurch to Wellington .
In 1976 the Wanaka was sold to the Greek Sealanes Transport Company and renamed Rata Hills . After two years, in 1978 it went to the Greek shipping company Iniochos Shipping under the name Iniochos Express . In 1980 the French ferry company Brittany Ferries bought the ship and named it Breizh Izel . From then on it was in motion between Plymouth , Roscoff and Santander .
In the following years the Breizh Izel was chartered to various shipping companies: 1981 to Irish Ferries , 1982 to Sealink , 1983 to Overseas Container Services and 1987 to British Channel Island Ferries . In February 1989 the ship completed its last voyage for Brittany Ferries and was subsequently laid up .
In the same year the Breizh Izel went as Duchess M to the Marelite Marine Company, which had it converted into a passenger ferry in Greece. In 1990 the ship started the ferry service from Patras to Ancona , but changed the area of operation several times during its service life. In 1999 it went to Shinedeck Shipping Ltd. and was launched under the name Balbek in Eleusis .
After a short period of service between Igoumenitsa and Bari from June to September 2000 and a renewed layover , the Balbek was renamed Duchess M again and used as a hotel ship at the G8 summit in Genoa in 2001 . Then she returned to the ferry service.
After it was mainly used on the route from Bari to Durrës in the following years , it was finally retired in November 2011 and re-launched in Eleusis. After three years of inactivity, the Duchess M was renamed Chess in November 2014 and towed to Aliağa , Turkey , where it was scrapped on December 1st.
