Korsør [ kɔʀˈsøːʔʀ ] is a port city on the Great Belt on the island of Zealand ( Denmark ).

geography

The Lejodde with the lake Lejsøen is a nature reserve and is located north of Korsor right on the Great Belt. It is part of the EU bird sanctuary and entry is prohibited during the breeding season .

In addition to the historic city center ( Centrum Syd ), Korsør also includes the Halsskov district ( Centrum Nord ). The nearest settlements in the area are Svenstrup, Halseby and Frølunde.

history

The first documented mention of the name Korsør goes back to the year 1241st On November 26, 1425 Korsør received by the king Erik of Pomerania , the town charter . The urban development was mainly determined by the location, as the shortest connection over the Great Belt to Funen . So it became an important ferry port . Since the opening of the Great Belt crossing in 1998, only ferries to Langeland have left here.

In connection with the municipal reform on January 1, 2007 , Korsør became part of the new municipality of Slagelse .

The 18-hole golf course is certainly one of the most important tourist facilities in Korsør. It is located on the outskirts of Korsør in the old Tårnborg Park and is well cared for in its surroundings.

There is also a marina in the port of Korsør with berths for guest boats.

In addition to several hotels and campsites, there is also a youth hostel in the Svenstrup district .

With the Korsør Biograf Teater , the city has the world's oldest cinema that is still in use today .

There are several beaches in and around Korsør.

traffic

Due to its location on the Great Belt, shipping played a crucial role in the development and growth of the city. As early as the 19th century there was also a daily post ship connection to Lübeck-Travemünde . The direct connection to Germany ended with the ban on butter journeys in 1999.

The railway reached Korsør in 1847. The first station, Korsør, was on the headland of Halsskov Odde. In 1907 the station was relocated to the port of Korsor, because the protected port enables better loading possibilities for the ferry traffic , at the end 3 loading bridges were set up for the railway ferry service. With the opening of the tunnel under the Great Belt in 1997, the entire station area was shut down and dismantled. While the large track field was converted into an inner-city recreation zone, the so-called "Byparken" (German: Stadtpark), the former main station building was renovated and now serves as the headquarters of ScanCom International A / S. The new station is now outside, north of the town of Korsør and is integrated into the national IC network of DSB .

The E 20 motorway now passes north of the city, and the toll booth for the Storebælt bridge follows after exit 43 . Here you had to switch to a ferry in the port of Halsskov until the opening of the bridge to cross the Great Belt. Motor vehicles were also loaded onto ferries in the port of Korsør itself. In contrast to the port in Korsør, the traces of the ferry time are more visible in the port of Halsskov.

The existing walls date back to the time of the Swedish occupation after the Peace of Roskilde , when the fortress was improved between 1658 and 1660 .

At the westernmost point of the municipality, at the foot of the Storebælt Bridge, was the first station of Korsør. The yellow post office of Christian VI. and its white annex still stand today.
