Pia Elisabeth Juul (born May 30, 1962 in Korsør , Denmark ) is a Danish writer .

Life

Pia Juul is the daughter of the two teachers and writers Kurt Juul and Inge Juul . She grew up in Rørbæk . She studied English at Aarhus University and made her own literary debut in 1985, just three years after her father's literary debut, with the poetry collection levende og lukke . Since then she has written several short stories and published collections of poetry, with her works selling over 10,000 times in Denmark alone by 2005. She has received several scholarships and literary prizes for her work, including the Beatrice Prize . In 2012 she was awarded the prestigious Critic's Prize for Af sted, til stede .

Juul celebrated greater success with her second novel Mordet på Halland , published in 2009 . In the same year she received the Danske Bank Literature Prize endowed with 300,000 Danish kroner for the work . The book has been translated into several languages, including English and German. After a translation by Ursel Allenstein , the book was published in 2011 by DuMont Verlag in Cologne under the German title Das Leben nach dem Happy End . While the book was ignored by German literary criticism, the British daily The Independent attested that the story, written in a “free, cool style”, “lacked tension”.

As a consequence of the NSA affair , Juul and more than 1,000 writers worldwide, including five Nobel Prize winners , signed an international appeal to protest for privacy and freedom of expression .
