Karol Zalewski (born August 7, 1993 in Reszel ) is a Polish sprinter who specializes in the 200-meter run and is particularly successful with the Polish 4-by-400-meter relay.

Athletic career

Karol Zalewski gained his first international experience in 2011 when he was disqualified in the 200-meter run at the European Junior Championships in Tallinn . The following year he reached the finals at the Junior World Championships in Barcelona , where he finished fourth in 20.54 s and also with the Polish 4 x 100 meter relay he came fourth in 39.47 s . He also won the silver medal behind the team from the United States with the 4 x 400 meter relay with a new U20 record of 3: 05.05 min. In 2013 he won the U23 European Championships in Tampere in 20.41 s over 200 meters and won the silver medal in 38.81 s with the 4 x 100 meter relay. He qualified for the first time for the World Championships in Moscow , where he reached the semi-finals in the individual competition and was eliminated there with 20.66 s, while he failed with the relay in 38.51 s in the lead. At the IAAF World Relays 2014 in the Bahamas , he finished fifth in the B final with the 4 x 100 meter relay in 39.31 seconds. In August, he finished eighth in 20.58 s at the European Championships in Zurich and finished sixth in the relay in 38.85 s.

In 2015 he reached the semifinals at the European Indoor Championships in Prague in the 400-meter run , where he was eliminated with 46.84 seconds and won the 4-by-400-meter relay together with Rafał Omelko , Łukasz Krawczuk and Jakub Krzewina in a new indoor record of 3: 02.97 min the silver medal behind the team from Belgium. He then finished fourth in the 4-by-200-meter relay at the World Relays in 1: 22.85 min and retired from the 4-by-400-meter relay with 3: 05.13 min in advance. He then won the U23 European Championships in 20.49 s again over 200 meters and won the silver medal in the 4 x 400 meter relay in 3: 05.35 min, while he won the 4 x 100 Meter relay was disqualified in the preliminary run. Over 200 meters he also took part again in the World Championships in Beijing , but this time he was eliminated with 20.77 s in the first round . The following year he reached the semifinals at the European Championships in Amsterdam over 200 meters and was eliminated there with 20.69 s and reached sixth place in the 4 x 100 meter relay in 38.69 s. He then took part in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro over 200 meters , but failed there with 20.54 s in the lead .

In 2018 he won the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham in a new world record time of 3: 01.77 minutes together with Omelko, Krawczuk and Krzewina in front of the favored teams from the United States and Belgium. Over 400 meters he took part in the European Championships in Berlin in the summer , where he finished fourth in 45.34 seconds and fifth in the 4 x 400 meter relay in 3: 02.27 minutes. The following year he reached the semifinals at the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow over 400 meters, but did not play there. He then finished seventh at the World Relays in Yokohama in 3: 05.91 min and won the mixed relay in 3: 15.46 min.

In 2013 and 2014, as well as in 2016 and 2017, Zalewski was Polish champion in the 100-meter run and from 2013 to 2016 also over 200 meters. In 2018 he won the 400-meter run and in 2019 the 4-by-400-meter relay. In the hall he was champion in the 200 meters from 2014 to 2016 and 2018 as well as in 2015 and 2019 in the 400 meters and in 2019 also in the 4 x 100 meter relay.
