Tigist Gashaw Belay (born December 25, 1996 ) is a Bahraini middle-distance runner of Ethiopian origin who specializes in the 1,500 meter run . She has been eligible to start for Bahrain since 2015.

Athletic career

Internationally, Tigist Gashaw appeared for the first time at the 2013 World Youth Championships in Donetsk . She won there in a time of 4: 14.25 minutes over 1500 meters. Then she was second at the Junior African Championships in Réduit in 4: 12.38 min of her compatriot Dawit Seyaum .

Starting in 2016, she originally won the silver medal for Bahrain at the Asian Indoor Championships in Doha behind Betlhem Desalegn from the United Arab Emirates. This was subsequently convicted of doping and Gashaw was then guaranteed the gold medal. During the outdoor season she also qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where she was eliminated with 4: 10.96 min in the first round . In 2017 she was fourth in the mixed relay at the World Cross Country Championships in Kampala and fourth in the 1500 meters at the Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku . In 2018 she took part in the Asian Games in Jakarta for the first time and won the silver medal there in 4: 09.12 minutes behind her compatriot Kalkidan Gezahegne . The following year, she won the silver medal behind the Indian PU Chitra at the Asian Championships in Doha in 4: 14.81 minutes . Before that, she won the Bahraini 4 x 400 meter relay in 3: 48.60 min at the Arab Championships in Cairo and was fourth over 1500 meters in 4: 32.03 min. In the 5000 meter run , she then took part in the World Championships in Doha, but could not finish her preliminary run there. At the Military World Games in Wuhan she was seventh over 1500 meters in 4: 31.15 minutes and fourth over 5000 meters in 15: 31.56 minutes.
