Maria Cioncan

Maria Cioncan (born June 19, 1977 in Maieru , Bistrița-Năsăud district ; † January 21, 2007 near Plewen , Bulgaria ) was a Romanian athlete . The middle-distance runner was third in the 2004 Olympics.

Maria Cioncan was Romanian champion in 2003 in the 800-meter run and in 2003 and 2004 in the 1500-meter run . At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, she won the bronze medal behind Kelly Holmes (GBR) and Tatiana Tomaschowa (RUS) in the 1500 meter run in a personal best . She finished seventh in the 800-meter run.

When she returned from a training camp in Greece, she was killed in a car accident on January 21, 2007. According to the police report, she lost control of her car, a Škoda Fabia I , and hit a tree on the edge of the road from Sofia to Pleven.

Maria Cioncan had a competition weight of 51 kg with a height of 1.72 m.
