Sillium is a village that belongs to the municipality of Holle in the Hildesheim district.

location

Sillium is located in the Harz foothills on Kreisstraße 308 between the Hildesheimer Börde and the Wohldenberg. The proximity to the motorways 7 and 39 as well as the federal highway 6 and federal highway 444 ensure the transport connection. Public transport is available by bus or by the Derneburg train station, 3 km away.

The neighboring villages of Sillium are Holle , Sottrum , Baddeckestedt and Schlewecke.

Economy, infrastructure and education

The economic importance of Sillium is limited to a few artisanal and agricultural businesses.

A wind farm with eight wind turbines is located on both sides of the federal motorway 7 , which passes about 1.5 km east of the town . Since April 2007 a power pole system has also been planned. This is, however, strongly criticized by the Citizens' Initiative (BI) and is an open conflict between the citizens and the energy supplier E.ON become.

A kindergarten is operated in the village , which was expanded to include a day nursery in February 2019 .

history

At the beginning of the 14th century, after the death of Count Heinrich V, the episcopal domain , which was combined with the Wohldenberg, emerged from the possessions of Count Wohldenberg in Sillium .

Shepherd's barn Sillium

The agricultural domain remained in the possession of the church for centuries. In 1963 the domain leaseholder Kaspar Wiethoff made the 275  hectare farm available for subdivision. After long negotiations, five farming families were sent to their resettler farms in 1965/66. The remaining arable land of the domain was divided among existing farms. The remainder of the domain area was initially taken over by the community of Sillium, who sold it to the bank director Busch from Hildesheim, who had the old farm buildings torn down in 1967. The next owner, a brickworks owner from Sottrum, had construction sites built on the site. Today, near the old manor house, the old shepherd's barn is still standing, a large building made of sandstone, the basic substance of which has been restored.

The castle Wohldenberg and Silliumer chapel were completely destroyed in 1641. The half-timbered chapel built in the same place fell victim to a large fire on September 12, 1879, which also destroyed half the village.

In 1891 the volunteer fire brigade was founded in Sillium . Community leader Karl Mund, who apparently brought the idea of founding a defense to the town, was also elected captain straight away.

On March 1, 1974, Sillium was incorporated into the municipality of Holle.

New housing estates emerged:

  • 1950 on Gartenstrasse
  • 1960/1966 on Schulstrasse
  • 1972 at Hopfenkamp and Holler Ohefeld
  • 1999 Am Holler Ohefeld

coat of arms

The historical connection between the village of Sillium and the Wohldenberg is expressed in the fact that a picture of Wohldenberg Castle was included in the municipal coat of arms . The representation was chosen from the grave slab of Bishop Otto I , who had acquired the castle for the Hildesheim Monastery in 1275 . The Wohldenberger tournament collar forms the upper edge of the municipal coat of arms.

Attractions

Protestant church

There is an Evangelical St. Matthew Church in Sillium, built in 1883. In the town center, where several well-preserved or renovated half-timbered houses can be seen, the former manor house of the domain is noteworthy. Not far from there is the shepherd's barn.

On the outskirts there is a community park with small ponds, bridges and benches, which was donated by the citizens of Sillium.
