geography

Sottrum lies between the Hildesheimer Börde and Wohldenberg Castle in the Harz foreland . The neighboring villages are Hackenstedt , Henneckenrode , Sillium , Holle and Derneburg . Sottrum is the second largest village in the municipality of Holle after Holle .

history

The history of Sottrum, like so many other villages in Holl, was determined over the centuries by the Derneburg monastery, which acquired extensive possessions in the village from 1249 to 1286, acquired the tithe and subsequently pledged and sold these goods several times.

In 1223, Bishop Konrad II handed over the Sottrum main and baptismal church of St. Martin to the provost of the Augustinian monastery at that time. There is no document about the incorporation of the Sottrumer Church into the Derneburg Monastery. This was also the reason for the investigation ordered in 1436 at the Council of Basel , which was supposed to examine the legality of this transfer to the monastery. Documentary evidence of incorporation could not be provided because, according to the monastery, the documents were burned. However, the investigation must ultimately have turned out to be in favor of the monastery, since in the 16th century the entire property of the Sottrum church was in the possession of the monastery.

In 1443, Abbot Heinrich Barnten from the Marienrode monastery handed over the Augustinian monastery in Derneburg to the order of the Cistercians because the monastic customs were less and less observed by the nuns living there. With this handover, the right of patronage over the Church of St. Andrew was passed to the Order of St. Bernard of Clairvaux . The Sottrum parish was integrated in the association of the monastery parish of St. Andreas Derneburg, and the church of St. Martin formed the permanent parish institution for the Sottrum Catholics until 1651.

Sottrum was belonging politically office Wohldenberg that the Bishopric of Hildesheim after the Bishop John IV. Of Saxe-Lauenburg lost Hildesheimer pin feud (1519-1523) to the Principality of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel under Duke Henry II. (Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel) got. Under his government, the Catholic religious relationships in the parishes, including Sottrum, initially remained, even if, in the long term, the Duke wanted to change the internal church structures in favor of an independent Catholic regional church regiment.

In 1542 a Protestant church visit was carried out in Sottrum after Duke Heinrich II had been expelled from the Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg by the Schmalkaldic League . The execution of this visitation did not correspond to the Reformation , since in 1523 they had placed themselves under the protection of Erich I von Calenberg . Because of the church visit, Sottrum was parish off to Holle. The Protestant community in Holle received its first preacher in 1544, Wilhelmus Bodicher .

After 1643 the Derneburg monastery was returned to the Hildesheim prince-bishop Ferdinand von Bayern (1612–1650), who left the monastery to the Cistercian order . In Sottrum, the missionary work of the Cistercians re-established the Catholic faith in the community, and the monastery became the central point for the re-Catholicization of the surrounding Protestant communities.

Sottrum was hit by fire bombs on January 20, 1944 during World War II. Three farms suffered severe damage.

On March 1, 1974, Sottrum was incorporated into the municipality of Holle.

Economy and Infrastructure

Companies

On the site of the former brickworks there is now a large industrial area of the municipality of Holle. For a long time, the brickworks founded in 1870 dominated the village's economic life. The brick factory passed into the hands of Heinrich Steding in 1911, who also acquired the neighboring Schlewecke brick factory in the same year. Since 1930, both companies have been working as an annual company and initially mainly masonry bricks and then roof tiles were produced. In March 1972, production in the Sottrum brickworks was shut down, 80 workers and employees in Sottrum lost their jobs and the municipality lost its largest taxpayer. This slump was compensated for by the establishment of new businesses.

Culture and sights

  • The Brüggemühle, located near Sottrum, has existed since 1471, when Count Heinrich von Rhoden donated it to the Derneburg monastery. The water mill, newly built in 1837, burned out in 1956, and in 1966 the water association “Untere Nette” acquired the right to hold the Brüggemühle in order to regulate the river, thereby avoiding floods, draining the meadows for agriculture and allowing the Derneburg fish ponds to be stored fully automatically to install.
  • The Sottrum family park (formerly Eulenspiegelpark, after Till Eulenspiegel ) also makes the village known nationwide. The park has been around since the 1970s. Police pig Luise, who was known in Germany, lived there her last years and died there too. The park offers themed areas on natural and human history, natural sciences as well as play attractions such as a lake with pedal boats, discovery trails, petting zoo , slides and the like "for children from 0 to 100 years".
  • On the district road 309 to Hackenstedt are the mighty remains of the imperial oak, which has been declared a natural monument but has since died. When it had to be felled in June 2012 because of rot, 550 annual rings were counted, so it was planted in 1462.
  • The Protestant Martin Luther Church , modernized in the nave and completely redesigned in the Rococo style after its destruction in the Thirty Years War from 1745 to 1773 , is worth a visit because of its murals from the late Middle Ages and its altar from 1745. The tower was built in the 11th century.
  • In the old town center of Sottrum, numerous well-preserved half-timbered houses from the 18th and early 19th centuries are noteworthy, especially in the area of Wasserstraße, Lindenweg and Martin Luther Church. Some of them are decorated with sayings carved in wood.
  • When the Prussians dissolved the Derneburg Castle in 1803, the later Count Ernst zu Münster ensured that Sottrum received a new Catholic church in the village. The monastery church had served the relatively many Catholic residents of Sottrum as a parish church. This built in the classical style and dedicated to St. The hall church consecrated to Andreas with its almost square floor plan is a plastered building and is often incorrectly attributed to the Hanoverian master builder Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves , who, however, only worked for the Counts of Münster in Derneburg much later. In front of the church, popularly known as the “coffee mill” because of its unusual shape, there are four larger-than-life baroque saints made of sandstone , which come from the Derneburg monastery church, which was demolished in 1812. The single-nave church was built from 1816 to 1818 on a gently sloping terrain on a base made of rubble stones. It has a hipped roof with a covered with slate roof skylights in the center instead of a church tower. Its outer walls are structured by a surrounding cornice and loosened up by six arched windows. One of the most striking features of the interior is the baroque altar. Behind the church there is a small park with several ponds.
  • Behind the St. Andrew's Church is a stone floor cross , which was made in 1748 according to an inscription engraved in the base. In the upper part of the cross there is a niche in which a figure of a saint may have been placed earlier. Further hall crosses from 1748, albeit smaller ones, can be seen on the road from Sottrum to Holle.
