St. Hubertus Church

St. Hubertus is the Catholic parish church in Wohldenberg Castle , which belongs to Sillium , Holle municipality , in the Hildesheim district. The baroque church , consecrated in 1731, impresses above all with its high-quality original furnishings.

history

The castle on the Wohldenberg, built in the 12th century, became the property of the prince-bishops of Hildesheim in 1275 . At least since 1286 - mention of a castle chaplain - it had a church. Their original patronage is unknown. Some evidence speaks for Peter and Paul .

As a result of the Hildesheim collegiate feud , the area became Brunswick in 1523 and Lutheran under Duke Julius in 1568 . After the restitution of the bishopric in 1643, the old village parish churches remained Protestant, but the monasteries and episcopal castles were re-Catholicized, including the Wohldenberg church, which now became a parish church for the few Catholics in the surrounding villages.

In 1724 Clemens August received Hildesheim from Bavaria to Cologne , Münster and Paderborn as his fourth prince bishopric ( Osnabrück followed in 1728 ). At this time Johann Friederich Antonius Freiherr von Bocholtz was Episcopal Droste on the Wohldenberg. It was probably he who inspired the prince-bishop to build the new baroque castle church, which has now been given the name of St. Hubert , the patron saint of the hunters.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, Catholic churches were also built in Sottrum , Henneckenrode , Grasdorf and Baddeckestedt . Since August 1, 2004, they have formed the merged parish of St. Hubertus with Wohldenberg . Today the parish belongs to the dean's office Alfeld-Detfurth in the diocese of Hildesheim . The Marienkapelle in Söder is also part of their catchment area .

The former office building from 1852 below the castle was bought in 1920 by the Diocesan Caritas Association . In 1946 the youth education center Haus Wohldenberg of the Diocese of Hildesheim was built in the building that had last served as a military hospital . Over the decades, several new buildings were built on the premises, including a house chapel in 1982 and, most recently, the new Hubertushaus in 2008 .

architecture

The in approximately 212 meters above sea level location Hubertus church is a rectangular hall structure of quarry stone with a gable roof , which on the altar side hipped is. The wall surfaces are plastered in white except for the reveals , edges and decorative elements. The show gable over the west portal is designed with steps, soft curves and a Dreiecksbekrönung with cross. Its surface is loosened up with architraves and garlands . A Latin inscription above the portal names the founder Clemens August and the patron saint of the hunters St. Hubertus. The flat ceiling is stuccoed and divided into the community room and the altar area by an arch.

Furnishing

The baroque interior includes the high altar and two side altars as well as the organ prospectus with rich figures and pictures. It comes from the Hildesheim carver Johannes Süßemann , who was inspired by the works of Paul Egel in Hildesheim Cathedral . The main altar with a depiction of the crucifixion is flanked by adoring angels and the apostles Peter and Paul. The left side altar is dedicated to the Holy Tribe , the right to the Rosary .

The modern celebration altar and the ambo were created by Josef Baron from Unna. These are bronze casts from 1986. The altar was placed on the existing communion bench, which prevented the valuable choir screen from being destroyed.

In 1985 Manfred Gaulke built today's organ into the baroque organ case .
