Maieru ( German  Maier , Hungarian Major ) is a municipality in the north of Transylvania in the Bistrița-Năsăud district in Romania .

history

The first mention was made in 1440. The other parts of Transylvania belonged Maieru to 1919 and then from 1940 to 1944 to Hungary from 1919 to 1940 and since 1944 it belongs to Romania. In the Middle Ages the community was inhabited by Romanians , during the Austro-Hungarian period the majority of the population was Romanians. In the 1910 census, 3125 inhabitants were counted. By 1992 the population had grown to 7,186.
