Jon Brown (actually: Jonathan Michael Brown ; born February 27, 1971 in Bridgend , Wales ) is a Canadian long-distance runner of British origin.

In 1994 he was fifth over 5000 m at the Commonwealth Games in Victoria , in 1996 at the Olympic Games in Atlanta over 10,000 m and in 1998 at the European Athletics Championships in Budapest fourth over the same distance. At the European championship in cross country he won gold in 1996 and bronze in 1999; his best placement at the World Cross Country Championships was eighth in 1999. He set two current British records: in 1994 in the 15 km road race with 42:39 min and in 1998 in the 10,000 meter run with 27: 18.14 min .

In 1997 he turned to the marathon . A ninth place in the Chicago Marathon in 2:10:13 h was followed by an eighth place in the London Marathon in 1998 . It was there that he improved in fourth place in 1999 to 2:09:44 h. At the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 he finished fourth, just seven seconds behind bronze.

After finishing sixth in the New York City Marathon in 2001, he was sidelined for a long time due to injuries. In 2004 he came in 15th place in the London Marathon in 2:13:39 h, became British marathon champion and qualified for the Olympic Games in Athens , where he again came fourth.

In the following year he defended his national championship title in sixth place in the London Marathon and set his personal best with 2:09:31 h. That same year he finished ninth in New York, and in 2006 he finished seventh in the Fukuoka Marathon .

Brown, who has lived in Canada since 1996 and has had dual citizenship since 2005, started working for Canada in early 2008. The reason for the change, for which he was criticized by various sports officials, he cited the lack of support from the British Athletics Federation. The time of 2:12:27, which he finished ninth in the 2008 Fukuoka Marathon, was the fastest of a Canadian that year.

Jon Brown grew up in South Yorkshire and studied at Iowa State University . He lives in Victoria ( British Columbia ) with his German wife Martina and two children . He starts in England for the City of Sheffield Athletics Club and in Canada for the Prairie Inn Harriers.
