The Vysotsky Monastery ( Russian Высоцкий монастырь , wiss. Transliteration Vysockij monastyr ) is a fortified Russian Orthodox male monastery located on the high left bank of the Nara near the central Russian city of Serpukhov . The name comes from the Russian word Wyssota, which means hill.

The monastery was founded in 1374 by the cousin of Moscow's Grand Duke Dmitri Donskoy , Prince Vladimir the Brave . For a long time it also served as a border fortress against the raids of the Tatars of the Golden Horde . In 1571 the monastery was burned down during the campaign of the Crimean Khan Devlet Giray to Moscow . In the following decades the monastery was rebuilt, from this time the Cathedral of the Conception dates back to with its five onion domes, as well as the current monastery walls and defense towers. The neoclassical bell tower dates from the 1840s. For the 500th anniversary of the monastery, the All Saints Church was built in neo-Byzantine style . Numerous important figures from Russian history are buried in the monastery cemetery, including Chancellor Gabriel Golowkin .

After the October Revolution , the monastery was closed and used as barracks for the Bolshevik Latvian riflemen . At the end of the Soviet era, the former monastery was in a very shabby condition. After 1991 it was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church, which immediately began rebuilding the monastery.
