Ioan Soter

Ioan Soter ( Hungarian Sőtér János; born May 16, 1927 in Timișoara , † September 26, 1987 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian high jumper .

He won the World Festival of Youth and Students in 1947 and won silver in 1949 and 1951.

In 1952 he was sixth at the Olympic Games in Helsinki . At the World Festival of Youth and Students, he won gold in 1953 and bronze in 1955.

In 1956 he became English champion. He set his personal best of 2,055 m on June 2, 1956 in Istanbul .

As a coach, he led his wife Iolanda Balaş to two Olympic victories.
